Standardversion In the days of Ahaz son of Jotham, son of Uzziah, king of Judah, Rezin king of Aram and Pekah son of Remaliah king of Israel marched up against Jerusalem to make war on it, but they could not prevail against it.
In the days of Ahaz son of Jotham, son of Uzziah, king of Judah, Rezin king of Aram and Pekah son of Remaliah king of Israel marched up against Jerusalem to make war on it, but they could not overpower it. The Hebrew verb is לְהִלָּחֵם ("to fight/wage war against"), echoing לַמִּלְחָמָה earlier in the verse. "Overpower" introduces an idea of capture not present in the wording; "prevail against" keeps the military sense and preserves the deliberate repetition, which also reads well aloud.
