Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, to the church of God in Corinth, together with all the saints throughout Achaia:
Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort,
who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we can comfort those in any affliction with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.
For just as the sufferings of Christ overflow into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows.
If we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which is at work as you patiently endure the same sufferings we endure.
And our hope for you is firm, for we know that as you share in the sufferings, so you share also in the comfort.
For we do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, of the affliction we suffered in Asia. We were crushed beyond measure, beyond our strength, so that we despaired even of life itself.
Indeed, we felt we had received the sentence of death, so that we would not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead.
He rescued us from so deadly a peril, and he will rescue us. On him we have set our hope that he will rescue us again,
as you also join in helping us by your prayers, so that thanks may be given by many people on our behalf for the gracious gift granted to us.
Now this is our boast: our conscience testifies that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially toward you, with the holiness and sincerity that come from God—not with worldly wisdom but by God's grace.
For we write you nothing other than what you can read and understand. And I hope you will understand fully,
as you have already understood us in part, that on the day of our Lord Jesus you will boast of us just as we will boast of you.
Because I was confident of this, I wanted to come to you first, so that you might have a second experience of grace.
I planned to visit you on my way to Macedonia and to come back to you from Macedonia, and then to have you send me on my way to Judea.
When I planned this, was I being fickle? Or do I make my plans in a worldly way, ready to say "Yes, yes" and "No, no" in the same breath?
But as surely as God is faithful, our message to you is not "Yes" and "No."
For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, whom we proclaimed among you—I and Silvanus and Timothy—was not "Yes" and "No," but in him it has always been "Yes."
For all the promises of God find their "Yes" in him. And so through him we speak our "Amen" to the glory of God.
It is God who establishes us together with you in Christ and who has anointed us,
who has also sealed us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a down payment.[^1] [^1]: The Greek word pictures a first installment that guarantees the full payment still to come.
I call God as my witness, on my very life, that it was to spare you that I did not come again to Corinth.
Not that we lord it over your faith—rather, we work with you for your joy, for you stand firm in the faith.
