Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are you not my work in the Lord?

Even if I am not an apostle to others, I certainly am to you, for you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord.

This is my defense to those who sit in judgment on me.

Do we not have the right to eat and drink?

Do we not have the right to take along a believing wife, as the other apostles do, and the brothers of the Lord, and Cephas?

Or are Barnabas and I the only ones who have no right to be free from working for a living?

Who serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard and does not eat its fruit? Who tends a flock and does not drink its milk?

Am I saying this merely from a human point of view? Doesn't the Law say the same thing?

For it is written in the Law of Moses: "Do not muzzle an ox while it is threshing." Is God concerned about oxen,

or is he speaking entirely for our sake? Yes, it was written for us: the plowman ought to plow in hope, and the thresher to thresh in hope of a share in the harvest.

If we have sown spiritual seed among you, is it too much to reap a material harvest from you?

If others have this right over you, do we not have it all the more? Yet we have not made use of this right. Instead, we endure everything so as not to put any obstacle in the way of the gospel of Christ.

Don't you know that those who work in the temple get their food from the temple, and that those who serve at the altar share in what is offered there?

In the same way, the Lord has commanded that those who proclaim the gospel should live from the gospel.

But I have not made use of any of these rights. And I am not writing this so that such provision may be made for me. I would rather die than have anyone deprive me of this boast.

For if I preach the gospel, that gives me no ground for boasting, since I am under compulsion. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel!

If I do this willingly, I have a reward; but if unwillingly, I am simply entrusted with a stewardship.

What then is my reward? Just this: that in preaching I may offer the gospel free of charge, and so not make full use of my rights in the gospel.

For though I am free from all, I have made myself a slave to all, in order to win as many as possible.

To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law—though I myself am not under the law—to win those under the law.

To those without the law I became like one without the law—though I am not without God's law but am under the law of Christ—to win those without the law.

To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people, so that by every possible means I might save some.

I do all this for the sake of the gospel, so that I too may have a share in it.

Don't you know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way as to win the prize.

Every athlete in training exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable crown; we, one that lasts forever.

So I do not run aimlessly, and I do not box as one beating the air.

No, I discipline my body and bring it into submission, so that after preaching to others I myself will not be disqualified.
