Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, to the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: grace to you and peace.

We always thank God for all of you, mentioning you in our prayers, constantly

remembering before our God and Father your work of faith, your labor of love, and your endurance born of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.

For we know, brothers and sisters loved by God, that he has chosen you.

For our gospel came to you not in word only, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake,

and you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you welcomed the word in the midst of great affliction with the joy of the Holy Spirit.

And so you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia.

For the word of the Lord has rung out from you, not only in Macedonia and Achaia; your faith in God has become known everywhere, so that we have no need to say anything.

For they themselves report about us what kind of welcome we received among you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God,

and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead—Jesus, who rescues us from the wrath that is coming.

People

Chapter 1 opens with three named senders: Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy. Silvanus (Latin form; Silas in Greek) was a Roman citizen and one of the leaders in the Jerusalem church (Acts 15:22). He was chosen to accompany Paul after the conflict with Barnabas and participated in establishing the church in Thessalonica (Acts 17:1-9). Timothy, who was from Lystra and had a Jewish mother and Greek father, was later sent back to Thessalonica to strengthen the young congregation (1 Thess 3:2). The fact that all three are mentioned as co-senders reflects the collective nature of missionary work and confirms their eyewitness account of the church's founding.

Macedonia and Achaia (vv. 7-8) were the two Roman provinces comprising the Greek mainland.
