Like snow in summer or rain at harvest, so honor does not suit a fool.
Like a sparrow in flight, like a swallow on the wing, so an undeserved curse never lands.
A whip for the horse, a bridle for the donkey, and a rod for the backs of fools.
Do not answer a fool according to his folly, or you will be just like him.
Answer a fool according to his folly, or he will think himself wise.
Whoever sends a message by the hand of a fool cuts off his own feet and drinks violence.
Like the useless legs of a lame man is a proverb in the mouth of fools.
Like tying a stone to a sling is giving honor to a fool.
Like a thorn branch in a drunkard's hand is a proverb in the mouth of fools.
Like an archer wounding everyone is the one who hires a fool or hires just anyone passing by.<note>The Hebrew of this verse is obscure; other renderings are possible, such as "A master workman produces everything, but the one who hires a fool hires passersby."</note>
As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool repeats his folly.
Do you see a man who is wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.
The sluggard says, "There's a lion in the road, a lion in the streets!"
As a door turns on its hinges, so the sluggard turns on his bed.
The sluggard buries his hand in the dish; he is too weary to lift it to his mouth.
The sluggard thinks himself wiser than seven men who can give a sound answer.
Like grabbing a dog by the ears is meddling in a quarrel that is not your own.
Like a madman shooting firebrands and deadly arrows,
so is the one who deceives his neighbor and says, "I was only joking!"
Without wood a fire goes out; without a gossip a quarrel dies down.
As charcoal feeds the embers and wood the fire, so a quarrelsome man kindles strife.
The words of a gossip are like choice morsels; they go down deep inside.
Like a clay pot glazed with silver dross are fervent lips that hide an evil heart.
An enemy disguises himself with his words, but he harbors deceit within.
Though his voice is charming, do not trust him, for seven abominations fill his heart.
His hatred may be covered by deception, but his wickedness will be exposed in the assembly.
Whoever digs a pit will fall into it, and a stone rolled uphill comes back on the one who rolled it.
A lying tongue hates those it crushes, and a flattering mouth works ruin.
