Jesus heals a man who was born blind. This long chapter highlights the contrast between physical and spiritual blindness - the man increasingly sees clearly who Jesus is, while the Pharisees become increasingly blind.

The Blind Shall See

As Jesus was passing by, he saw a man who had been blind from birth.
His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?"
Jesus answered, "Neither this man nor his parents sinned. This happened so that the works of God might be revealed in him.
We must do the works of him who sent me while it is day. Night is coming, when no one can work.
As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world."
When he had said this, he spat on the ground, made mud with the saliva, and spread it on the man's eyes.
Then he told him, "Go, wash in the pool of Siloam" (which means "Sent"). So the man went and washed, and came back seeing.
His neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar said, "Isn't this the man who used to sit and beg?"
Some said, "It's him." Others said, "No, but he looks like him." He himself kept saying, "I am the one."
So they asked him, "How were your eyes opened?"
He answered, "The man called Jesus made mud, spread it on my eyes, and told me, 'Go to Siloam and wash.' So I went and washed, and I could see."
"Where is he?" they asked him. "I don't know," he said.
They brought the man who had been blind to the Pharisees.
Now it was on a Sabbath day that Jesus had made the mud and opened his eyes.
So the Pharisees also asked him again how he had received his sight. He told them, "He put mud on my eyes, and I washed, and now I see."
Some of the Pharisees said, "This man is not from God, because he does not keep the Sabbath." But others said, "How can a sinner perform such signs?" So they were divided.
They turned again to the blind man: "What do you say about him, since it was your eyes he opened?" He said, "He is a prophet."
The Jews still did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight, so they called for the parents of the man who now could see.
They asked them, "Is this your son, the one you say was born blind? How is it that he can now see?"
His parents answered, "We know that he is our son and that he was born blind.
But how he can see now, or who opened his eyes, we do not know. Ask him. He is of age; he can speak for himself."
His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed that anyone who confessed Jesus to be the Christ would be expelled from the synagogue.
That is why his parents said, "He is of age; ask him."
So a second time they called the man who had been blind, and they said to him, "Give glory to God! We know that this man is a sinner."
He answered, "Whether he is a sinner I do not know. One thing I do know: I was blind, and now I see."
Then they asked him, "What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?"
He answered them, "I already told you, and you would not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?"
At this they hurled insults at him and said, "You are that man's disciple; we are disciples of Moses.
We know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this man, we do not know where he comes from."
The man answered them, "Now that is remarkable! You do not know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes.
We know that God does not listen to sinners, but he does listen to anyone who worships him and does his will.
Never in all history has anyone heard of someone opening the eyes of a man born blind.
If this man were not from God, he could do nothing."
They answered him, "You were born steeped in sin, and you presume to teach us?" And they threw him out.
Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him he said, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?"
He answered, "And who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?"
Jesus said to him, "You have seen him; he is the one speaking with you."
"Lord, I believe," he said, and he worshiped him.
Then Jesus said, "For judgment I have come into this world, so that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind."
Some of the Pharisees who were with him heard this and said, "Are we blind too?"
Jesus said to them, "If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin. But since you claim to see, your sin remains."
