O LORD my God, in you I take refuge; save me from all who pursue me, and deliver me,

or he will seize me like a lion, ripping me to pieces with no one to rescue me.

O LORD my God, if I have done this, if there is guilt on my hands,

if I have repaid my friend with evil, or plundered my enemy without cause,

then let my enemy pursue me and overtake me; let him trample my life into the ground and lay my honor in the dust. Selah

Rise up, O LORD, in your anger; lift yourself against the fury of my foes. Awake for me; you have commanded judgment.

Let the assembly of the peoples gather around you, and over them return on high.

The LORD judges the nations. Judge me, O LORD, according to my righteousness and the integrity that is in me.

Put an end to the malice of the wicked, and establish the righteous, you who test hearts and minds, O righteous God.

My shield is God, who saves the upright in heart.

God is a righteous judge, a God who shows his wrath every day.

If a man does not repent, God sharpens his sword; he bends his bow and takes aim.

He has prepared his deadly weapons; he makes ready his flaming arrows.

See how the wicked man labors with evil; he conceives trouble and gives birth to lies.

He digs a pit and hollows it out, and falls into the hole he has made.

His trouble comes back on his own head; his violence comes down on the crown of his head.

I will praise the LORD for his righteousness; I will sing to the name of the LORD Most High.

The superscription mentions Cush, son of Benjamin (כּוּשׁ בֶּן־יְמִינִי), a person not mentioned elsewhere in the Bible. The name "Cush" means "Ethiopian" or "dark" and could be either a proper name or a nickname. The expression "son of Benjamin" (בֶּן־יְמִינִי) is the same designation used for King Saul and his clan (1 Sam 9:1; 2 Sam 16:11). Many scholars have therefore suggested that Cush may be one of Saul's supporters who pursued David, or possibly a code name for Saul himself or someone in his close circle. The historical event to which the psalm refers is not preserved in the biblical narratives, but the context fits the period when David fled from Saul.

The expression לְדֹלְקִים יִפְעָל (v. 14) can be translated as "he makes [the arrows] burning" or "he makes [the arrows] for pursuers," since the Hebrew דֹּלְקִים can be derived from both "to burn" and "to pursue."
