Rescue me from my enemies, my God; set me safe above those who rise against me.

Rescue me from those who do evil; save me from bloodthirsty men.

See how they lie in wait for my life! Fierce men band together against me, though I have done no wrong, committed no sin, O LORD.

For no guilt of mine they run and take their positions. Rise up to meet me, and see!

You, LORD God of hosts, God of Israel, awake to punish all the nations; show no mercy to those who treacherously do evil. Selah

They return at evening, snarling like dogs, prowling around the city.

See how they pour out words with their mouths; swords are on their lips—"For who is listening?" they say.

But you, LORD, laugh at them; you mock all the nations.

O my Strength, I keep watch for you, for God is my fortress.

My God of mercy will come to meet me; God will let me look in triumph on my foes.

Do not kill them, or my people will forget. Make them stagger by your power and bring them down, O Lord, our shield.

For the sin of their mouths, for the words of their lips, let them be caught in their own pride, for the curses and the lies they tell.

Consume them in wrath, consume them till they are no more; then they will know that God rules over Jacob to the ends of the earth. Selah

The heading links the psalm to a specific episode in David’s life: when Saul sent men to guard his house with the intent of killing him (1 Sam 19:11–17). According to the biblical account, it was Michal, David’s wife and Saul’s daughter, who warned David and helped him escape through a window. Saul’s men surrounded the house at night and waited until morning to kill David. This background explains the psalm’s imagery of enemies who "come back in the evening" and "wander about the city" (vv. 7, 15), as well as the desperate plea for deliverance from those lying in ambush.
