Therefore love the LORD your God, and keep his charge, his statutes, his ordinances, and his commandments always.

Know today that it was not your children who saw and experienced the discipline of the LORD your God—his greatness, his mighty hand, his outstretched arm,

his signs and his deeds that he performed in the midst of Egypt against Pharaoh king of Egypt and all his land;

what he did to the army of Egypt, to its horses and chariots, when he swept the waters of the Red Sea over them as they pursued you, and the LORD destroyed them, so it remains to this day;

what he did for you in the wilderness until you came to this place;

and what he did to Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab son of Reuben, when the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them, with their households, their tents, and every living thing that belonged to them, in the midst of all Israel.

It was your own eyes that saw every great deed the LORD has done.

So keep every commandment I am giving you today, that you may be strong and may go in and take possession of the land you are crossing over to possess,

and that you may live long in the land the LORD swore to give to your fathers and their descendants, a land flowing with milk and honey.

For the land you are entering to possess is not like the land of Egypt, which you left behind, where you sowed your seed and had to water it by foot, as in a vegetable garden.

But the land you are crossing over to possess is a land of hills and valleys, watered by rain from heaven,

a land the LORD your God cares for. The eyes of the LORD your God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year to its end.

And if you faithfully obey the commandments I am giving you today—loving the LORD your God and serving him with all your heart and all your soul—

then I will send rain for your land in its season, the autumn rain and the spring rain, and you will gather in your grain, your new wine, and your oil.

I will provide grass in your fields for your livestock, and you will eat and be satisfied.

Be careful, or your heart will be enticed and you will turn aside to serve other gods and bow down to them.

Then the LORD's anger will burn against you, and he will shut up the heavens so that there is no rain and the ground yields no produce, and you will quickly perish from the good land the LORD is giving you.

Fix these words of mine in your heart and soul. Bind them as a sign on your hand, and let them be an emblem on your forehead.

Teach them to your children, speaking of them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates,

so that your days and the days of your children may be many in the land the LORD swore to give your fathers, as long as the heavens are above the earth.

If you carefully keep all this commandment I am giving you to follow—loving the LORD your God, walking in all his ways, and holding fast to him—

then the LORD will drive out all these nations before you, and you will dispossess nations greater and stronger than you.

Every place where you set your foot will be yours. Your territory will reach from the wilderness to Lebanon, and from the River—the Euphrates—to the Western Sea.

No one will be able to stand against you. The LORD your God will put the dread and fear of you upon the whole land wherever you go, just as he promised you.

See, today I am setting before you a blessing and a curse:

the blessing, if you obey the commandments of the LORD your God that I am giving you today;

the curse, if you do not obey the commandments of the LORD your God but turn aside from the way I command you today, to follow other gods you have not known.

When the LORD your God brings you into the land you are entering to possess, you are to proclaim the blessing on Mount Gerizim and the curse on Mount Ebal.

Are they not beyond the Jordan, toward the setting sun, in the land of the Canaanites who live in the Arabah, opposite Gilgal, near the oaks of Moreh?

You are about to cross the Jordan to go in and take possession of the land the LORD your God is giving you. When you have taken it and settled there,

be careful to obey all the statutes and ordinances I am setting before you today.

The chapter mentions Dathan and Abiram (verse 6), sons of Eliab from the tribe of Reuben. These two, together with Korah, led a rebellion against Moses' leadership in the wilderness, as described in Numbers 16. The punishment came when the earth opened up and swallowed them along with their households. It is noteworthy that Korah himself is not mentioned here—possibly because the focus is on the civil rebellion (Dathan and Abiram) rather than the priestly one (Korah), or because Korah's descendants survived and continued to serve in the temple (Numbers 26:11).

The chapter describes the borders of the promised land (verse 24): from the wilderness in the south to Lebanon in the north, from the Euphrates River in the northeast to "the latter sea" (הַיָּם הָאַחֲרוֹן, the Mediterranean Sea) in the west. The term "latter" arises because the Israelites oriented themselves toward the east, so that west became "behind." This represents the ideal extent of Israel's territory, which historically was only approximated during the reigns of David and Solomon.

This was later literally interpreted as the basis for tefillin (prayer straps with scripture passages) and mezuzot (containers with scripture scrolls placed on doorframes).

The Samaritans, who still regard Mount Gerizim as holy, have preserved traditions connected to this place and continue to celebrate Passover there. Inscriptions and temples on Gerizim from the Persian and Hellenistic periods testify to the site's enduring religious importance.
