So all Israel was registered by genealogy, and these are recorded in the Book of the Kings of Israel. And Judah was carried away into exile to Babylon because of their unfaithfulness.
The first to resettle on their own property in their own towns were Israelites, priests, Levites, and temple servants.
In Jerusalem there lived some of the descendants of Judah, of Benjamin, and of Ephraim and Manasseh:
Uthai son of Ammihud, son of Omri, son of Imri, son of Bani, from the descendants of Perez son of Judah.
From the Shilonites: Asaiah the firstborn, and his sons.
From the descendants of Zerah: Jeuel. Their kinsmen numbered 690.
From the descendants of Benjamin: Sallu son of Meshullam, son of Hodaviah, son of Hassenuah;
Ibneiah son of Jeroham; Elah son of Uzzi, son of Michri; and Meshullam son of Shephatiah, son of Reuel, son of Ibnijah.
Their kinsmen, according to their genealogies, numbered 956. All these men were heads of their ancestral houses.
From the priests: Jedaiah, Jehoiarib, Jachin;
and Azariah son of Hilkiah, son of Meshullam, son of Zadok, son of Meraioth, son of Ahitub, the chief officer of the house of God;
Adaiah son of Jeroham, son of Pashhur, son of Malchijah; and Maasai son of Adiel, son of Jahzerah, son of Meshullam, son of Meshillemith, son of Immer.
Their kinsmen, heads of their ancestral houses, numbered 1,760 — capable men, skilled in the work of the service of the house of God.
From the Levites: Shemaiah son of Hasshub, son of Azrikam, son of Hashabiah, of the descendants of Merari;
Bakbakkar, Heresh, Galal, and Mattaniah son of Mica, son of Zichri, son of Asaph;
Obadiah son of Shemaiah, son of Galal, son of Jeduthun; and Berechiah son of Asa, son of Elkanah, who lived in the villages of the Netophathites.
The gatekeepers were Shallum, Akkub, Talmon, and Ahiman; their kinsman Shallum was the chief.
To this day he is stationed at the King's Gate on the east side. These were the gatekeepers belonging to the camps of the Levites.
Shallum son of Kore, son of Ebiasaph, son of Korah, and his kinsmen of his ancestral house, the Korahites, were in charge of the work of the service, guarding the thresholds of the tent, just as their fathers had guarded the entrance to the camp of the LORD.
In earlier times Phinehas son of Eleazar was the chief officer over them, and the LORD was with him.
Zechariah son of Meshelemiah was the gatekeeper at the entrance to the tent of meeting.
All those chosen as gatekeepers at the thresholds numbered 212. They were registered by genealogy in their villages. David and Samuel the seer had appointed them to their trusted office.
So they and their sons were in charge of the gates of the house of the LORD, the house of the tent, keeping watch.
The gatekeepers were stationed on all four sides — east, west, north, and south.
Their kinsmen in their villages had to come in from time to time to serve with them for seven-day terms,
for the four chief gatekeepers, who were Levites, held a position of trust and were in charge of the chambers and the treasuries of the house of God.
They spent the night around the house of God, because the watch was their responsibility, and they had charge of the key to open it morning by morning.
Some of them were in charge of the utensils used in the service; they counted them when they brought them in and when they took them out.
Others were appointed over the furnishings and all the holy vessels, and over the fine flour, the wine, the oil, the frankincense, and the spices.
Some of the priests' sons prepared the mixture of the spices.
Mattithiah, one of the Levites, the firstborn of Shallum the Korahite, was entrusted with baking the flat cakes.
And some of their kinsmen, the Kohathites, were in charge of preparing the bread of the Presence every Sabbath.
These were the singers, heads of Levite families, living in the temple chambers and free from other duties, because they were on duty day and night.
These were the heads of the Levite families, chiefs according to their genealogies, and they lived in Jerusalem.
Jeiel the father of Gibeon lived in Gibeon; his wife's name was Maacah.
His firstborn son was Abdon, then Zur, Kish, Baal, Ner, Nadab,
Gedor, Ahio, Zechariah, and Mikloth.
Mikloth was the father of Shimeam. They too lived near their kinsmen in Jerusalem, along with their relatives.
Ner was the father of Kish, Kish the father of Saul, and Saul the father of Jonathan, Malchi-shua, Abinadab, and Esh-baal.
The son of Jonathan was Merib-baal, and Merib-baal was the father of Micah.
The sons of Micah were Pithon, Melech, Tahrea, and Ahaz. [Footnote: The Hebrew text here lists only three sons; the name Ahaz is supplied from the parallel list in chapter 8 and from ancient versions, since verse 42 continues with Ahaz.]
Ahaz was the father of Jarah; Jarah was the father of Alemeth, Azmaveth, and Zimri; and Zimri was the father of Moza.
Moza was the father of Binea; Rephaiah was his son, Eleasah his son, and Azel his son.
Azel had six sons, and these were their names: Azrikam, Bocheru, Ishmael, Sheariah, Obadiah, and Hanan. These were the sons of Azel.
