How lovely are your dwelling places, LORD of hosts!

My soul longs, yes, faints for the courts of the LORD; my heart and my flesh cry out for joy to the living God.

Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young — at your altars, LORD of hosts, my King and my God.

Blessed are those who dwell in your house; they are always praising you. Selah

Blessed are those whose strength is in you, in whose hearts are the pilgrim highways.<note>Hebrew reads simply "highways in their hearts"; the image is of roads leading up to the sanctuary, hence the sense of a pilgrim's journey.</note>

As they pass through the Valley of Baca, they make it a place of springs; the early rain covers it with blessings.

They go from strength to strength, till each appears before God in Zion.

LORD God of hosts, hear my prayer; give ear, O God of Jacob. Selah

Look upon our shield, O God; look with favor on the face of your anointed.

Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather stand at the threshold of the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.

For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows favor and honor. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly.

LORD of hosts, blessed is the one who trusts in you.

The temple had an inner court and an outer court, and it was in these areas that people experienced fellowship with God and the Israelite community. Verse 4 also mentions "your altars" (מִזְבְּחוֹתֶיךָ, mizbekhotekha), which includes the altar of burnt offering in the court.

The Valley of Baca

Verse 7 mentions the "Valley of Baca" (עֵמֶק הַבָּכָא, emek ha-bakha). The name may mean "valley of weeping" or "balsam valley" (after a tree that grew in dry areas).
