A psalm of David. The LORD says to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet."

The LORD will extend your mighty scepter from Zion. Rule in the midst of your enemies!

Your people offer themselves freely on the day of your power; arrayed in holy splendor, from the womb of the dawn, yours is the dew of youth.

The LORD has sworn and will not change his mind: "You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek."

The Lord is at your right hand; he shatters kings on the day of his wrath.

He will judge among the nations, heaping up corpses; he will shatter the head over the wide earth.

He will drink from the brook beside the way; therefore he will lift up his head.

People

Melchizedek (מַלְכִּי־צֶדֶק) is a mysterious figure mentioned only twice in the Old Testament: Genesis 14:18–20 and here in verse 4. In the Genesis account, he appears as "king of Salem" and "priest of God Most High (El Elyon)," who blesses Abraham and receives a tithe from him. His name means "my king is righteousness" or "king of righteousness." Salem is traditionally identified with Jerusalem (see Psalm 76:3). What makes Psalm 110 unique is that kingship and priesthood are combined in one person—something unusual in Israel, where these roles were normally separate (the king from the tribe of Judah, the priests from Levi).

Places

Zion (צִיּוֹן) is mentioned in verse 2 as the starting point for the king’s rule. In a Davidic context, Zion specifically refers to the City of David, the oldest part of Jerusalem that David captured from the Jebusites (2 Samuel 5:7). Archaeological excavations in the City of David have uncovered structures from the Iron Age, including what may be remains of administrative buildings. Later, Zion became synonymous with the temple mount and all of Jerusalem as God’s chosen dwelling place and center of royal authority.

Events and Customs

The coronation ritual reflected in this psalm has parallels in ancient Near Eastern royal ideologies. The expression "sit at my right hand" (verse 1) mirrors an ancient Near Eastern court custom where the place of honor at the ruler’s right side indicated the highest rank and authority. The image of "enemies as a footstool" (הֲדֹם לְרַגְלֶיךָ) is known from Egyptian and Assyrian iconography, where victorious kings were depicted with their foot on the necks of defeated enemies or with enemies carved into their footstools.

The king-priest combination in verse 4 reflects a practice known from several ancient Near Eastern cultures, especially in pre-Israelite Jerusalem under Jebusite rule. The fact that Melchizedek was both king and priest may point to a Jerusalem tradition that David inherited when he captured the city. The Melchizedek tradition became significant in later messianic interpretation.
