After the Tower of Babel, the lineage follows from Shem to Abram (Abraham), whom God calls to become the father of a new people.

Shorter Lifespans

Notice that lifespans gradually became shorter after the flood—from Shem's 600 years down to what we know today.

Now the whole earth had one language and a common speech.
As people migrated from the east, they came upon a plain in the land of Shinar and settled there.
They said to one another, "Come, let us make bricks and fire them thoroughly." So they used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar.
Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, and make a name for ourselves, so that we will not be scattered over the face of the whole earth."
But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the children of man were building.
And the LORD said, "Look, they are one people with one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do. Nothing they set their minds to will be beyond them.
Come, let us go down and confuse their language, so that they will not understand one another's speech."
So the LORD scattered them from there over the face of the whole earth, and they stopped building the city.
That is why it was called Babel,* because there the LORD confused the language of the whole earth; and from there the LORD scattered them over the face of the whole earth. [*Footnote: The name Babel sounds like the Hebrew word meaning "to confuse."]
This is the account of Shem. Two years after the flood, when Shem was a hundred years old, he became the father of Arpachshad.
After he became the father of Arpachshad, Shem lived five hundred years and had other sons and daughters.
When Arpachshad had lived thirty-five years, he became the father of Shelah.
After he became the father of Shelah, Arpachshad lived four hundred and three years and had other sons and daughters.
When Shelah had lived thirty years, he became the father of Eber.
After he became the father of Eber, Shelah lived four hundred and three years and had other sons and daughters.
When Eber had lived thirty-four years, he became the father of Peleg.
After he became the father of Peleg, Eber lived four hundred and thirty years and had other sons and daughters.
When Peleg had lived thirty years, he became the father of Reu.
After he became the father of Reu, Peleg lived two hundred and nine years and had other sons and daughters.
When Reu had lived thirty-two years, he became the father of Serug.
After he became the father of Serug, Reu lived two hundred and seven years and had other sons and daughters.
When Serug had lived thirty years, he became the father of Nahor.
When Nahor had lived twenty-nine years, he became the father of Terah.
After he became the father of Terah, Nahor lived a hundred and nineteen years and had other sons and daughters.
After Terah had lived seventy years, he became the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran.
This is the account of Terah. Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran, and Haran became the father of Lot.
Haran died in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldeans, while his father Terah was still alive.
Abram and Nahor both took wives. Abram's wife was named Sarai, and Nahor's wife was named Milcah, the daughter of Haran, who was the father of Milcah and Iscah.
Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, the wife of his son Abram, and together they set out from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to the land of Canaan. But when they came to Haran, they settled there.
Terah lived two hundred and five years, and he died in Haran.
