For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:

a time to be born and a time to die; a time to plant and a time to uproot what is planted;

a time to kill and a time to heal; a time to tear down and a time to build;

a time to weep and a time to laugh; a time to mourn and a time to dance;

a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them; a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing;

a time to seek and a time to lose; a time to keep and a time to throw away;

a time to tear and a time to mend; a time to be silent and a time to speak;

a time to love and a time to hate; a time for war and a time for peace.

What does the worker gain from all his toil?

I have seen the task God has given to the children of man to keep them occupied.

He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in their hearts, yet no one can grasp what God has done from beginning to end.

I know there is nothing better for people than to rejoice and do good while they live.

Also, that everyone should eat and drink and find satisfaction in all his toil—this is the gift of God.

I know that everything God does will endure forever; nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God has done it so that people will stand in awe before him.

Whatever is has already been, and what will be has been before; and God seeks out what has been driven away.

And I saw something else under the sun: in the place of judgment—wickedness was there; in the place of justice—wickedness was there.

I said in my heart, "God will judge the righteous and the wicked, for there is a time for every matter and for every deed."

I said in my heart concerning the children of man: God tests them to show them that they are but animals.

For the fate of man and the fate of the animal are one and the same: as one dies, so dies the other. They all have the same breath, and man has no advantage over the animal, for everything is vanity.

All go to one place. All came from the dust, and to the dust all return.

Who knows whether the spirit of man rises upward and the spirit of the animal goes down into the earth?

So I saw that there is nothing better than for a person to rejoice in his work, for that is his portion. Who can bring him to see what will come after him?

In verse 11, we find the enigmatic expression הָעֹלָם (ha-olam), which can mean "eternity," "the world," or "what is hidden." God has placed this in the human heart, yet at the same time, humans cannot fully comprehend God's work. This tension between human longing and limited understanding is a core theme in wisdom literature.

Events and Customs

The poem about times in verses 2–8 reflects concrete life experiences in ancient Israel. "A time to cast away stones and a time to gather stones" (v. 5) has been interpreted as references to agricultural work (clearing fields or building stone walls), military actions (destroying or rebuilding), or marital relations. "A time to tear apart and a time to sew together" (v. 7) likely alludes to the mourning ritual in which people tore their garments as a sign of grief, followed by repair once the period of mourning was over—a custom still practiced in Jewish tradition (keri'ah).

The reflection on humans and animals in verses 18–21 must be understood against the background of ancient Near Eastern cosmology. The question of whether human רוּחַ (ruach – spirit/life-breath) rises upward while that of an animal sinks downward was debated. Here, the Preacher poses a rhetorical question (v. 21: "Who knows...?") that challenges hasty assumptions and compels the reader to reflect honestly on the reality of death and humanity's limited knowledge.
