David went up from there and stayed in the strongholds of En-gedi.

When Saul returned from pursuing the Philistines, he was told, "David is in the wilderness of En-gedi."

So Saul took three thousand chosen men from all Israel and went to look for David and his men in the direction of the Rocks of the Wild Goats.

He came to the sheepfolds along the way, where there was a cave, and Saul went in to relieve himself. Now David and his men were sitting far back in the cave.

David's men said to him, "This is the day the LORD spoke of when he said to you, 'I am giving your enemy into your hand; do to him whatever seems good to you.'" So David got up and quietly cut off a corner of Saul's robe.

Afterward David's conscience struck him because he had cut off the corner of Saul's robe.

He said to his men, "The LORD forbid that I should do such a thing to my lord, the LORD's anointed, or lift my hand against him; for he is the LORD's anointed."

With these words David held his men back and would not let them attack Saul. And Saul left the cave and went on his way.

Then David got up, went out of the cave, and called after Saul, "My lord the king!" When Saul looked behind him, David bowed with his face to the ground and paid him homage.

David said to Saul, "Why do you listen to men who say, 'David is out to harm you'?

This very day your own eyes have seen how the LORD gave you into my hand in the cave. I was urged to kill you, but I spared you. I said, 'I will not lift my hand against my lord, for he is the LORD's anointed.'

See, my father—yes, see the corner of your robe in my hand! For I cut off the corner of your robe and did not kill you. Know and see that there is no evil or rebellion in my hand. I have not sinned against you, yet you are hunting me down to take my life.

May the LORD judge between me and you, and may the LORD avenge me on you; but my own hand will not touch you.

As the old proverb says, 'From the wicked comes wickedness.' But my hand will not touch you.

Against whom has the king of Israel marched out? Whom are you chasing? A dead dog! A single flea!

May the LORD be the judge and decide between me and you. May he look into it, take up my cause, and vindicate me against your hand."

When David had finished saying this to Saul, Saul asked, "Is that your voice, my son David?" And Saul wept aloud.

He said to David, "You are more righteous than I, for you have repaid me with good, while I have repaid you with evil.

You have shown today how well you have dealt with me: the LORD handed me over to you, and you did not kill me.

When a man finds his enemy, does he let him go unharmed? May the LORD reward you with good for what you have done for me today.

Now I know that you will surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel will be secure in your hand.

Swear to me now by the LORD that you will not wipe out my descendants after me or blot out my name from my father's house."

So David swore this to Saul. Then Saul went home, but David and his men went up to the stronghold.

The oasis has permanent freshwater springs that make it a fertile place in the midst of the Judean wilderness. The geographical conditions—with countless caves and inaccessible terrain—made the area ideal as a refuge for fugitives and rebels throughout history. The name "the crags where the wild goats dwell" (צוּרֵי הַיְּעֵלִים, v. 3) refers to the Nubian ibex that still lives in the region. Archaeological investigations have revealed human activity in the caves at En-Gedi from several periods, including their use as hiding places.

The expression "to cover one’s feet" (לְהָסֵךְ אֶת־רַגְלָיו, v. 4) is a euphemism for relieving oneself. Such euphemisms were common in ancient Israel to refer to bodily functions with dignity. The act of cutting off the corner of Saul’s robe carries deep symbolic meaning in this culture.
