This is what the LORD says: For three transgressions of Moab, and for four, I will not relent — because they burned the bones of the king of Edom to lime.

So I will send fire against Moab, and it will devour the fortresses of Kerioth. Moab will die amid the uproar, amid war cries and the blast of the ram's horn.

I will cut off the judge from her midst, and kill all her officials with him, declares the LORD.

This is what the LORD says: For three transgressions of Judah, and for four, I will not relent — because they rejected the law of the LORD and did not keep his statutes, and their lies led them astray, the same lies their fathers followed.

So I will send fire against Judah, and it will devour the fortresses of Jerusalem.

This is what the LORD says: For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will not relent — because they sell the righteous for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals.

They trample the heads of the poor into the dust of the earth and push the humble out of the way. Father and son go in to the same young woman, and so profane my holy name.

They stretch out beside every altar on garments taken in pledge, and in the house of their God they drink wine bought with fines.

Yet it was I who destroyed the Amorite before them, though he was as tall as the cedars and as strong as the oaks. I destroyed his fruit above and his roots below.

It was I who brought you up out of the land of Egypt and led you forty years through the wilderness, to take possession of the land of the Amorite.

I raised up prophets from among your sons and Nazirites from among your young men. Is this not so, people of Israel? declares the LORD.

But you made the Nazirites drink wine, and you commanded the prophets: Do not prophesy!

Now I will press you down where you stand, as a cart is pressed down when it is loaded with sheaves.

The swift will find no escape, the strong will not hold on to his strength, and the warrior will not save his life.

The archer will not stand his ground, the fleet of foot will not get away, and the horseman will not save his life.

Even the bravest of the warriors will flee naked on that day, declares the LORD.

Places

Moab and Kerijoth (vv. 1–3): Moab was a kingdom east of the Dead Sea, on the high plateau that today lies in Jordan. Kerijoth (הַקְּרִיּוֹת) can be understood either as a specific place name or as a common noun meaning "the cities" (with the definite article). If it is a place name, it was likely one of Moab's towns. The Mesha Stele (ca. 840 B.C.), discovered in 1868, mentions several Moabite cities and confirms the historical existence of this kingdom. The Moabites were related to the Israelites through Lot (Gen 19:37) and had a long history of both conflict and interaction with Israel.

Jerusalem (v. 5): The capital city of the kingdom of Judah is mentioned as the target of God's judgment. In Amos' time, Jerusalem was an important religious and political center, although it was less wealthy than the cities of the northern kingdom.

Events and Customs

Burning bones to lime (v. 1): The accusation against Moab concerns their burning of Edom's king's bones to lime (לַשִּׂיד). In the ancient Near East, respectful burial of the dead was of utmost importance. Digging up and burning a king's remains until they turned to dust was an extreme act of desecration, intended to completely erase the person's memory and prevent any form of honor after death. This custom of dishonoring enemies' graves is documented in several ancient texts.

Debt slavery and pledging of clothing (vv. 6–8): Amos describes how the poor were sold for trivial sums—even for a pair of sandals. This reflects the development of a debt-ridden society in Israel, where farmers unable to pay their debts were forced to sell themselves or family members into slavery. The law in Exodus 22:25–26 forbade keeping a poor person's cloak overnight as a pledge, since it was his only source of warmth. That people lay on pledged garments at the altar (v. 8) shows how religious worship had become mixed with social injustice.

Sexual immorality and desecration (v. 7): The expression "a man and his father go to the same young woman" (הַנַּעֲרָה) may refer to sexual exploitation of servant girls or possibly to cultic prostitution associated with Canaanite fertility worship. Regardless of interpretation, this dishonored God's holy name by combining sexual immorality with religious practice.

Nazirites (נְזִירִים, vv. 11–12): The Nazirites were individuals who had taken a special vow to God, described in Numbers 6. They were to abstain from wine and all grape products, not cut their hair, and avoid contact with dead bodies. Samson and Samuel are well-known examples. That the Israelites gave Nazirites wine to drink represented a direct attack on this holy institution and showed contempt for God's ordinances.

Amorites (הָאֱמֹרִי, vv. 9–10): The Amorites are used here as a collective term for the pre-Israelite population of Canaan. Torah and statutes (תּוֹרַת יְהוָה וְחֻקָּיו, v. 4): The accusation against Judah uses technical terms for God's revealed will. "Torah" denotes God's instruction and law, while "huqqim" (statutes) refers to the established decrees. This shows that Judah had a codified legal system they were obligated to follow.

Archaeological discoveries from Samaria, including ostraca and ivory inlays from the 8th century B.C., confirm the economic prosperity among the upper class that enabled the social injustice described in this chapter—where the poor were sold for as little as a pair of sandals (v. 6).
