Woe to those who lounge at ease in Zion, and to those who feel secure on Mount Samaria — you notable men of the foremost nation, to whom the house of Israel comes!

Cross over to Calneh and look; go on from there to great Hamath, then down to Gath of the Philistines. Are they better than these kingdoms of yours? Is their territory greater than yours?

You push away the day of disaster, yet you bring the reign of violence near.

You lie on beds inlaid with ivory and sprawl on your couches; you eat lambs from the flock and calves from the fattening stall.

You improvise to the sound of the harp and, like David, invent instruments for your songs.

You drink wine by the bowlful and anoint yourselves with the finest oils, but you do not grieve over the ruin of Joseph.

Therefore you will be the first to go into exile, and your sprawling revelry will come to an end.

The Lord GOD has sworn by himself — this is the declaration of the LORD, the God of hosts: I detest the pride of Jacob and hate his citadels; I will hand over the city and everything in it.

And if ten men are left in a single house, they too will die.

When a relative — the one who burns the bodies — comes to carry the bones out of the house, he will ask whoever is in the innermost room, "Is anyone else with you?" and the answer will come, "No one." Then he will say, "Silence! The name of the LORD is not to be spoken."

For look, the LORD is giving the command: he will smash the great house to rubble and the small house to pieces.

Do horses gallop over rock? Does anyone plow it with oxen? Yet you have turned justice into poison and the fruit of righteousness into bitterness.

You rejoice over Lo-debar, saying, "Have we not taken Karnaim by our own strength?" [Footnote: The Hebrew plays on two place names captured by Israel: Lo-debar sounds like "nothing," and Karnaim means "horns," a symbol of strength.]

But look, I am raising up a nation against you, house of Israel — this is the declaration of the LORD, the God of hosts — and they will oppress you from Lebo-hamath to the Brook of the Arabah.

Chapter 6 mentions several important cities that serve as points of comparison. Calneh (verse 2) was a significant city in northern Syria, possibly identical with Kullani. The city was likely conquered by Assyria in the eighth century B.C.E. Hamath was the capital of an Aramean kingdom north of Israel, a powerful city-state that also fell to Assyria. Gath was one of the five Philistine cities, severely weakened by the Aramean king Hazael around 815 B.C.E. (cf. 2 Kings 12:17) and later by Uzziah of Judah (2 Chronicles 26:6). Amos uses these cities rhetorically—they were all powerful, yet they fell nonetheless. This should warn Israel and Judah that their own fate was not secure.

Zion and the mountain of Samaria (verse 1) represent the capitals of the two kingdoms—Jerusalem and Samaria. The fact that both are mentioned together is unusual in Amos and shows that the "woe" cry (הוֹי) applies to all God's people, not just the northern kingdom. The boundary description "from Lebo-Hamath to the Arabah valley" (verse 14) marks the territory of the northern kingdom at its greatest extent, as it was under Jeroboam II (cf. 2 Kings 14:25). Ironically, this entire area is now threatened by oppression.

The chapter offers a rare glimpse into the lifestyle of the upper class in the eighth century B.C.E. The ivory couch (verse 4) testifies to extreme luxury. Archaeological finds from Samaria have uncovered hundreds of carved ivory plaques that decorated furniture and walls, imported from Phoenicia. Marbled calves were especially fat animals kept in stalls and force-fed—a delicacy reserved for the wealthiest.

Mirzach (מִרְזַח, mirzeach, verse 7) was a special banquet or festival institution known throughout the ancient Near East, including Ugaritic texts. It was a religious-social community that organized drinking parties, often associated with death cults and extravagant consumption. The fact that guests anointed themselves with "the finest oil" and drank wine from mizraq bowls (מִזְרָק, verse 6)—large offering vessels normally used in temple rituals—underscores both the extravagance and the blasphemous character of these feasts.

Key Terms

The expression "the ruin of Joseph" (שֵׁבֶר יוֹסֵף, shever Yosef, verse 6) refers to the spiritual and social decay of the northern kingdom—Ephraim and Manasseh. The fact that the elite do not "grieve over" this suggests complete moral blindness. The verb נֶחְלוּ (nechlu) from the root חלה means to feel deep pain, become sick with sorrow, or feel compassion for a condition.

Lo-debar (לֹא דָבָר, 'nothing') and Karnaim (קַרְנָיִם, 'horns/power') in verse 13 are wordplays where Amos mocks Israel's military self-confidence. The text literally says they "rejoice over lo-debar" (nothing) and boast of having "taken Karnaim" (horns/power) by their own strength. At the same time, these names may have referred to actual places in Transjordan where Israel had won victories.

Chapter-Specific Findings

The extensive ivory finds from Samaria, excavated in the 1930s, confirm precisely the luxury Amos describes. Over 500 ivory plaques with Egyptian and Phoenician motifs were discovered, dated to the ninth-eighth centuries B.C.E. These decorated furniture and wall panels in the homes of the aristocracy—exactly the "ivory couches" the prophet condemns. Along with finds of imported goods and fine stone houses on the acropolis at Samaria, this provides an archaeological picture of the extreme social inequality Amos attacks.
