This is what the Lord GOD showed me: a basket of summer fruit.

He asked, "What do you see, Amos?" I said, "A basket of summer fruit." Then the LORD said to me, "The end has come for my people Israel; I will never again pass them by." [Footnote: The Hebrew word for "summer fruit" (qayits) sounds like the word for "end" (qets).]

"On that day the songs of the palace will turn to wailing," declares the Lord GOD. "Corpses will be everywhere—flung out in silence." [Footnote: Or "the songs of the temple."]

Hear this, you who trample the needy and do away with the poor of the land,

saying, "When will the New Moon be over, so we can sell grain? When will the Sabbath end, so we can open the wheat market—shrinking the measure, enlarging the shekel weight, cheating with crooked scales,

buying the poor for silver and the needy for a pair of sandals, and selling the sweepings with the wheat?"

The LORD has sworn by the pride of Jacob: "I will never forget a single thing they have done.

"Will not the land tremble for this, and everyone who lives in it mourn? The whole land will rise like the Nile, churn and sink again like the river of Egypt."

"On that day," declares the Lord GOD, "I will make the sun go down at noon and darken the earth in broad daylight.

I will turn your festivals into mourning and all your songs into laments. I will put sackcloth on every waist and shave every head. I will make it like mourning for an only son, and its end like a bitter day.

The days are coming," declares the Lord GOD, "when I will send a famine on the land—not a famine of bread or a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD.

People will stagger from sea to sea and wander from north to east, searching for the word of the LORD, but they will not find it.

On that day the beautiful young women and the young men will faint from thirst—

those who swear by the guilt of Samaria, saying, 'As surely as your god lives, Dan,' and, 'As surely as the way of Beersheba lives.' They will fall, never to rise again."
