Hear this word that the LORD has spoken against you, people of Israel — against the whole family I brought up out of the land of Egypt:

You alone have I known of all the families of the earth; therefore I will call you to account for all your iniquities.

Do two walk together unless they have agreed to meet?

Does a lion roar in the forest when he has no prey? Does a young lion growl from his den unless he has caught something?

Does a bird fall into a trap on the ground where no snare is set for it? Does a trap spring up from the earth when it has caught nothing at all?

If a ram's horn sounds in a city, do the people not tremble? If disaster comes to a city, has the LORD not done it?

Surely the Lord GOD does nothing without revealing his counsel to his servants the prophets.

The lion has roared — who will not fear? The Lord GOD has spoken — who can but prophesy?

Proclaim it over the citadels of Ashdod and over the citadels in the land of Egypt, and say: Gather on the mountains of Samaria and see the great turmoil within her and the oppression in her midst.

They do not know how to do what is right, declares the LORD — those who store up violence and plunder in their citadels.

Therefore, this is what the Lord GOD says: An enemy will surround the land; he will pull down your defenses, and your citadels will be plundered.

This is what the LORD says: As a shepherd rescues from the lion's mouth two legs or a scrap of an ear, so shall the people of Israel be rescued — those who sit in Samaria on the edge of a bed, on the corner of a couch.

Hear this and testify against the house of Jacob, declares the Lord GOD, the God of hosts:

For on the day I punish Israel for its transgressions, I will also punish the altars of Bethel; the horns of the altar will be cut off and fall to the ground.

I will strike down the winter house along with the summer house; the houses of ivory will perish, and many houses will come to an end, declares the LORD.

Content: The Lord reminds Israel that He has chosen them above all other nations, but precisely for this reason He will punish them for their sins (vv. 1–2). Through a series of rhetorical questions, Amos shows that everything has a cause—including the coming judgment (vv. 3–8). God reveals His plans to the prophets before He acts. The chapter concludes with specific judgments: an enemy will surround the land, the altars at Bethel will be destroyed, and the palaces and ivory houses of the rich will perish (vv. 11–15).

Places

Samaria (שֹׁמְרוֹן) is the main focus of this chapter and is explicitly mentioned in verses 9 and 12. The city was the capital of the northern kingdom of Israel. Archaeological excavations have uncovered impressive palaces and the famous Samarian ivory carvings, which confirm Amos’s references to a luxurious lifestyle. The city’s location on the mountains made it a natural amphitheater where surrounding nations could "look down upon" the injustice taking place there (v. 9).

Ashdod (אַשְׁדּוֹד) and Egypt (מִצְרָיִם) in verse 9 are striking witnesses. Ashdod was a Philistine city-state. The fact that God calls these pagan nations to testify against Israel underscores how scandalous Israel’s behavior was—even pagans would be shocked by the oppression in Samaria.

Bethel (בֵּֽית־אֵל) in verse 14 was the central worship site of the northern kingdom. The horns on the altar that were to be cut off were normally places of refuge for those seeking asylum (cf. Exod 21:14)—the destruction of these symbolizes that no protection will be available.

Key Terms

The verb יָדַע (jada) in verse 2 ("only you have I known") means more than intellectual knowledge. In Hebrew usage, it implies intimate fellowship, covenant relationship, and election. The same word is used for marital intimacy. God is saying that Israel has had a unique, close covenant relationship with him—something that paradoxically increases their responsibility and makes the judgment stricter, not milder.

The expression פָּקַד (paqad) is often translated as "visit" or "punish" (vv. 2, 14), but it means that God "takes notice of" or "calls to account" his people. It is a covenant term describing how God holds the people accountable for breaking the covenant.

Events and Customs

The shepherd’s duty to provide evidence in verse 12 reflects ancient Near Eastern legal practice. According to the laws in Exodus 22:10–13, a shepherd who lost an animal to a predator had to present proof (remains such as bones or ear fragments) to avoid liability for compensation. The image Amos uses is therefore legally precise: what remains of Israel will be only enough to prove that the nation once existed, not enough for real survival.

Winter and summer houses (בֵית־הַחֹרֶף og בֵּית הַקָּיִץ) in verse 15 testify to the wealth of the elite. The wealthy had separate homes adapted to the seasons—a known luxury feature also attested in other Near Eastern texts. Ivory houses (בָּתֵּי הַשֵּׁן) are confirmed by the numerous ivory inlays found in Samaria: over 500 fragments with Phoenician and Egyptian styles dated to the 8th century BC, showing furniture and walls decorated with imported ivory.
