Hear this word, you cows of Bashan who live on Mount Samaria, you who oppress the poor and crush the needy, who say to your husbands, "Bring us something to drink!"

The Lord GOD has sworn by his holiness: Days are coming upon you when you will be carried off with hooks, the last of you with fishhooks.

You will go out through breaches in the wall, each woman straight ahead of her, and you will be cast out toward Harmon, declares the LORD.

Go to Bethel and sin; go to Gilgal and sin all the more! Bring your sacrifices every morning, your tithes every third day.

Burn leavened bread as a thank offering, proclaim your freewill offerings for all to hear—for this is what you love, people of Israel, declares the Lord GOD.

I gave you empty stomachs in all your cities and a lack of bread in all your places, yet you did not return to me, declares the LORD.

I also withheld the rain from you when the harvest was still three months away. I sent rain on one city and withheld it from another. One field was watered, while another withered for lack of rain.

People from two or three cities staggered to another city for water but were not satisfied, yet you did not return to me, declares the LORD.

I struck you with blight and mildew; the locust devoured your many gardens and vineyards, your fig trees and olive trees, yet you did not return to me, declares the LORD.

I sent plagues among you as I did to Egypt; I killed your young men with the sword, and your horses were carried away captive. I made the stench of your camps rise into your nostrils, yet you did not return to me, declares the LORD.

I overthrew you as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. You were like a charred stick snatched from the fire, yet you did not return to me, declares the LORD.

Therefore this is what I will do to you, Israel. Because I will do this to you, prepare to meet your God, Israel!

For behold, he who forms the mountains and creates the wind, who declares to man his thoughts, who makes the dawn and the darkness, and treads upon the heights of the earth—the LORD, the God of hosts, is his name.

The cows of Bashan were famous throughout the ancient Near East for their quality and size. When Amos calls the wealthy women of Samaria "the cows of Bashan", he uses this image sarcastically—they live in luxury and comfort at the expense of the poor.

Bethel and Gilgal (verse 4) were both important cultic centers in the northern kingdom. Bethel had great historical significance as the place where Jacob had his vision (Genesis 28), but under Jeroboam I it was established as one of two national sanctuaries with calf worship. Gilgal was the place where the Israelites set up twelve stones as a memorial after crossing the Jordan (Joshua 4), and it was connected to both Samuel and Saul. In Amos' time, both places were central to the syncretistic worship in the northern kingdom.

הַהַרְמוֹנָה (verse 3) is a difficult word that appears only here in the Bible. It may refer to a place (Harmon or Armenia) where those deported will be cast, or it could mean "the fortress/palace". The meaning is uncertain, but the context suggests a distant or humiliating destination.

The chapter describes Israelite sacrificial practices with an ironic tone (verses 4–5). The offerings mentioned—morning sacrifices, tithes every third day (לִשְׁלֹשֶׁת יָמִים – an ironic exaggeration of zeal for rituals), thank offerings of leavened bread, and voluntary gifts—were all legitimate elements of Israelite worship. Leavened bread was actually permitted in thank offerings (Leviticus 7:13). But Amos' point is that the rituals were performed with wrong motives: "for this is what you want"—they were more concerned with outward religion than with heart transformation.

The series of plagues described in verses 6–11—famine, drought, blight on crops, locusts, pestilence, and military defeat—follow the pattern of curses known from covenant tradition (cf. Leviticus 26; Deuteronomy 28). The Israelites would have recognized these as warned consequences of breaking the covenant. The Hebrew expression "you did not return to me" (וְלֹא־שַׁבְתֶּם עָדַי) is repeated five times as a refrain, emphasizing the people's stubborn disobedience.

The chapter ends with a doxology (verse 13)—a praise of the Lord's creative power. This type of doxology is characteristic of the book of Amos (see also 5:8–9 and 9:5–6). Here God is portrayed as the one who forms mountains, creates wind, turns dawn into darkness, and treads on the heights of the earth. The purpose is to emphasize that the God Israel must meet (verse 12) is the Almighty Creator of the universe.
