Then he led me out to the outer court, toward the north, and brought me to the chambers that face the open area and the building on the north side.
Along the north side its length was a hundred cubits, where the entrance was, and its width fifty cubits.
Opposite the twenty cubits belonging to the inner court, and facing the pavement of the outer court, there was gallery upon gallery in three tiers.
In front of the chambers ran a walkway ten cubits wide, leading inward by a passage one cubit wide, and their entrances faced north.
The upper chambers were shorter, because the galleries took space from them, more than from the lower and middle stories of the building.
For they were in three tiers and had no pillars like the pillars of the courts; therefore the upper chambers were set back from the ground more than the lower and middle ones.
There was an outer wall running alongside the chambers, toward the outer court, in front of the chambers; its length was fifty cubits.
For the chambers on the outer court were fifty cubits long, while those facing the temple were a hundred cubits.
Below these chambers was the entryway from the east, where one enters them from the outer court.
Along the thickness of the wall of the court toward the east, facing the open area and the building, there were chambers,
with a walkway in front of them. They looked like the chambers on the north side: the same length and width, the same exits, the same arrangements, and the same doorways.
Like the doorways of the chambers on the south, there was a doorway at the head of the walkway—the walkway in front of the corresponding wall—on the east side, where one enters them.
Then he said to me, "The north chambers and the south chambers that face the open area are the holy chambers, where the priests who draw near to the LORD shall eat the most holy offerings. There they shall lay the most holy offerings—the grain offering, the sin offering, and the guilt offering—for the place is holy.
When the priests enter, they shall not go out from the holy place into the outer court without leaving there the garments in which they minister, for these are holy. They shall put on other garments before approaching the area open to the people."
When he had finished measuring the interior of the temple area, he led me out by the gate that faces east and measured the whole area all around.
He measured the east side with the measuring rod: five hundred rods by the measuring rod.
He measured the north side: five hundred rods by the measuring rod.
He measured the south side: five hundred rods by the measuring rod.
Then he turned to the west side and measured five hundred rods by the measuring rod.
So he measured it on all four sides. It had a wall all around it, five hundred rods long and five hundred wide, to separate the holy from the common.
