In the ninth year, in the tenth month, on the tenth day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me:

Son of man, write down the name of this day, this very day. On this very day the king of Babylon has laid siege to Jerusalem.

Now speak a parable to the rebellious house and say to them: Thus says the Lord GOD: Set on the pot, set it on, and pour water into it.

Gather the pieces into it, every good piece, thigh and shoulder; fill it with the choicest bones.

Take the choicest of the flock, and pile the wood beneath it. Bring it to a boil, and cook its bones inside it as well.

Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Woe to the city of blood, the pot whose corrosion is in it, whose corrosion will not come off! Empty it piece by piece; no lot has fallen on it.

For the blood she shed is still within her. She poured it on the bare rock; she did not pour it on the ground, to cover it with dust.

To stir up wrath and take vengeance, I have set her blood on the bare rock, so that it would not be covered.

Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Woe to the city of blood! I too will make the fire blaze high.

Heap on the wood, kindle the fire, cook the meat thoroughly, mix in the spices, and let the bones be burned.

Then set the pot empty on its coals, so that it grows hot and its copper glows, its filth melting away inside it, its corrosion consumed.

It has frustrated every effort; its heavy corrosion will not come off—into the fire with its corrosion!

Your uncleanness is depravity. Because I would have cleansed you and you were not cleansed of your filth, you shall not be clean again until I have satisfied my wrath on you.

I, the LORD, have spoken. It is coming, and I will act. I will not hold back, I will not spare, I will not relent. According to your ways and your deeds they will judge you, declares the Lord GOD.

The word of the LORD came to me:

Son of man, I am about to take from you the delight of your eyes with a single blow. Yet you shall not mourn or weep, and no tears shall come.

Groan in silence; make no mourning for the dead. Keep your turban on your head and your sandals on your feet. Do not cover your lips, and do not eat the bread of mourners.

So I spoke to the people in the morning, and in the evening my wife died. And in the morning I did as I was commanded.

Then the people said to me, "Will you not tell us what these things mean for us, that you are doing this?"

I said to them: The word of the LORD came to me:

Say to the house of Israel: Thus says the Lord GOD: I am about to profane my sanctuary, the pride of your strength, the delight of your eyes, the yearning of your soul. And the sons and daughters you left behind will fall by the sword.

Then you will do as I have done: you will not cover your mustache or eat the bread of mourners.

Your turbans will stay on your heads and your sandals on your feet. You will not mourn or weep, but you will waste away in your guilt and groan to one another.

Ezekiel will be a sign for you; you will do everything he has done. When it comes, you will know that I am the Lord GOD.

And you, son of man—will it not be on the day I take from them their stronghold, the joy of their glory, the delight of their eyes and the longing of their souls, their sons and their daughters—

on that day a fugitive will come to you to bring the news to your ears.

On that day your mouth will be opened to the fugitive; you will speak and be silent no longer. So you will be a sign for them, and they will know that I am the LORD.

The Beginning of the Siege

The date given in verses 1–2—the tenth day of the tenth month in the ninth year—corresponds to January 15, 588 B.C. This is one of the most precise dates in the book of Ezekiel and marks the day when Nebuchadnezzar II began the final siege of Jerusalem. This date was later remembered as a fast day in Jewish tradition (Zechariah 8:19) and is still observed today as the fast day "Asara beTevet". Remarkably, while Ezekiel was in Babylon, far from Jerusalem, he received a revelation about this event on the very same day it occurred.

Mourning Rituals in Ancient Israel

The chapter offers a rare glimpse into Israelite mourning practices by describing what Ezekiel should not do. Normal customs included: removing head coverings (פְּאֵר, pe'er – turban or headdress), going barefoot, covering the lower face or beard as a sign of grief, and eating "mourning bread"—food brought by neighbors to those in mourning. Refraining from weeping and lamenting was highly unusual and would have drawn attention. The prophet's behavior became a "sign" (מוֹפֵת, mofet)—a symbolic act pointing toward a future reality.

The parallel is striking: just as Ezekiel lost his beloved wife, so the people would lose their beloved temple.

Babylonian chronicles confirm the siege of Jerusalem during Nebuchadnezzar's reign. Archaeological excavations in Jerusalem have uncovered evidence of destruction from 586 B.C., including layers of ash and Babylonian-style arrowheads.
