In the twenty-fifth year of our exile, at the beginning of the year, on the tenth day of the month, in the fourteenth year after the city was struck down—on that very day the hand of the LORD came upon me, and he brought me there.
In visions of God he brought me to the land of Israel and set me down on a very high mountain, and on it, to the south, there was what looked like the structure of a city.
He brought me there, and there stood a man whose appearance was like bronze. In his hand were a linen cord and a measuring rod, and he was standing in the gateway.
The man said to me, "Son of man, look with your eyes and listen with your ears, and fix your mind on everything I show you, for you have been brought here so that it may be shown to you. Tell the house of Israel all that you see."
And there was a wall surrounding the temple area on the outside. In the man's hand was a measuring rod six cubits long, each cubit being a cubit and a handbreadth. He measured the thickness of the wall: one rod; and its height: one rod.
Then he went to the gate that faces east and climbed its steps. He measured the threshold of the gate: one rod deep; and the other threshold: one rod deep.
Each guardroom was one rod long and one rod wide, and between the guardrooms was a span of five cubits. The threshold of the gate, next to the vestibule of the gate on the inner side, was one rod.
He measured the vestibule of the gate on the inner side: one rod.
Then he measured the vestibule of the gate: eight cubits; and its jambs: two cubits. The vestibule of the gate was at the inner end.
The guardrooms of the east gate were three on one side and three on the other, all three of the same measure; and the jambs on either side had the same measure.
He measured the width of the gate's entrance: ten cubits; and the length of the gateway: thirteen cubits.
In front of the guardrooms was a barrier one cubit high on one side and a barrier one cubit high on the other, and each guardroom was six cubits on one side and six cubits on the other.
Then he measured the gateway from the roof of one guardroom to the roof of the opposite one: twenty-five cubits wide, doorway facing doorway.
He made the jambs sixty cubits high, and the court reached to the jambs all around the gateway.
From the front of the outer entrance of the gate to the front of the vestibule of the inner gate was fifty cubits.
The guardrooms and their jambs had recessed windows all around the inside of the gateway, and so did the vestibules. There were windows all around on the inside, and palm trees were carved on the jambs.
Then he brought me into the outer court, and there were chambers and a pavement laid out all around the court; thirty chambers faced the pavement.
The pavement ran alongside the gateways, corresponding to their length; this was the lower pavement.
He measured the distance from the front of the lower gate to the outer front of the inner court: a hundred cubits, on the east and on the north.
He also measured the length and width of the gate of the outer court that faces north.
Its guardrooms were three on one side and three on the other, and its jambs and its porch had the same measurements as the first gate: fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits wide.
Its windows, its porch, and its palm trees had the same measurements as those of the gate facing east. Seven steps led up to it, and its porch was at the inner end.
Opposite the north gate, as with the east gate, there was a gate to the inner court; he measured from gate to gate: a hundred cubits.
Then he led me toward the south, and there was a gate facing south. He measured its jambs and its porch; they had the same measurements as the others.
It and its porch had windows all around, like the other windows: fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits wide.
Seven steps led up to it, and its porch was at the inner end; it had palm trees on its jambs, one on each side.
The inner court also had a gate facing south, and he measured from gate to gate toward the south: a hundred cubits.
Then he brought me into the inner court through the south gate, and he measured the south gate; it had the same measurements as the others.
Its guardrooms, its jambs, and its porch had the same measurements, and it and its porch had windows all around: fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits wide.
There were porches all around, twenty-five cubits long and five cubits wide.
Its porch faced the outer court, and palm trees were carved on its jambs; eight steps led up to it.
Then he brought me to the inner court on the east side, and he measured the gate; it had the same measurements as the others.
Its guardrooms, its jambs, and its vestibule had the same measurements, and it and its vestibule had windows all around: fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits wide.
Its porch faced the outer court, and palm trees were carved on its jambs, on both sides; eight steps led up to it.
Then he brought me to the north gate and measured it; it had the same measurements as the others,
with its guardrooms, its jambs, and its porch, and it had windows all around: fifty cubits long and twenty-five cubits wide.
Its vestibule faced the outer court, and palm trees were carved on its jambs, on both sides; eight steps led up to it.
There was a chamber with its doorway by the jambs of the gateways; there the burnt offering was rinsed.
In the vestibule of the gateway there were two tables on one side and two tables on the other, on which the burnt offering, the sin offering, and the guilt offering were slaughtered.
Outside, on the side wall as one goes up to the entrance of the north gateway, were two tables; and on the other side wall, by the vestibule of the gateway, were two more tables.
So there were four tables on one side of the gateway and four tables on the other—eight tables in all, on which the sacrifices were slaughtered.
There were also four tables of dressed stone for the burnt offering, each a cubit and a half long, a cubit and a half wide, and a cubit high; on them were laid the instruments used to slaughter the burnt offering and the other sacrifices.
Double hooks, a handbreadth long, were fastened all around inside, and the flesh of the offering was laid on the tables.
Outside the inner gate, in the inner court, were chambers for the singers: one beside the north gate, facing south, and one beside the east gate, facing north.
He said to me, "This chamber that faces south is for the priests who keep charge of the temple,
and the chamber that faces north is for the priests who keep charge of the altar. These are the sons of Zadok, who alone of the sons of Levi may draw near to the LORD to serve him."
Then he measured the court: a hundred cubits long and a hundred cubits wide, a perfect square; and the altar stood in front of the temple.
He brought me to the vestibule of the temple and measured the jambs of the vestibule: five cubits on one side and five cubits on the other; and the width of the gateway was three cubits on one side and three cubits on the other.
The vestibule was twenty cubits long and eleven cubits wide, and it was reached by steps; and there were pillars by the jambs, one on each side.
