All this I took to heart, examining it closely: that the righteous and the wise and all they do are in God's hand. No one knows whether love or hate awaits him; everything lies before them.

The same fate comes to everyone alike: to the righteous and the wicked, to the good, to the clean and the unclean, to the one who sacrifices and the one who does not. As it goes for the good, so for the sinner; as for the one who swears an oath, so for the one who fears to swear.

This is an evil in everything done under the sun: one fate comes to all. And the hearts of men are full of evil, and madness fills their hearts while they live, and afterward they go to the dead.

But whoever is among the living still has hope; a living dog is better than a dead lion.

The living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing; they have no more reward, for their memory is forgotten.

Their love, their hate, their jealousy—all of it has already perished, and never again will they have a share in anything done under the sun.

Go, eat your bread with joy and drink your wine with a glad heart, for God has already approved what you do.

Let your clothes always be white, and never lack oil on your head.

Enjoy life with the wife you love, all the fleeting days of life that God has given you under the sun—all your fleeting days. For this is your portion in life and in the work you toil at under the sun.

Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your strength, for there is no work or planning, no knowledge or wisdom, in the grave where you are going.

Again I saw under the sun that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor wealth to the discerning, nor favor to the skilled; for time and chance overtake them all.

For no one even knows his own hour. Like fish caught in a cruel net, like birds trapped in a snare, so are people ensnared at a time of disaster, when it falls upon them without warning.

I also saw this instance of wisdom under the sun, and it made a deep impression on me.

There was a small city with only a few people in it, and a great king came against it, surrounded it, and built massive siegeworks against it.

Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and by his wisdom he saved the city. Yet no one remembered that poor man.

So I said: Wisdom is better than strength. Yet the wisdom of the poor man is despised, and no one listens to his words.

The quiet words of the wise are heard above the shouting of a ruler of fools.

Wisdom is better than weapons of war, but one sinner can destroy much good.

Chapter 9 contains several references to social customs in ancient Israel and the Middle East. The exhortation in verses 7–9 to eat and drink with joy, wear white garments, and anoint one’s head with oil reflects festive practices of the ancient world. White clothing symbolized purity, joy, and prosperity—in contrast to dark garments worn during mourning. Anointing with oil was a sign of hospitality, well-being, and celebration. These verses have striking parallels to the Epic of Gilgamesh from Mesopotamia, where the alewife Siduri gives similar advice to the hero Gilgamesh as he seeks immortality.

The sacrificial practice mentioned in verse 2 ("the one who sacrifices and the one who does not sacrifice") shows that there was variation in religious practice within society.
