These are the names of Aaron's sons: Nadab the firstborn, then Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.
These are the names of Aaron's sons, the anointed priests, ordained to minister in the priesthood.
But Nadab and Abihu died before the LORD when they offered unauthorized fire before the LORD in the wilderness of Sinai, and they had no sons. So Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests during the lifetime of their father Aaron.
Bring forward the tribe of Levi and present them to Aaron the priest, to assist him.
They shall carry out duties for him and for the whole congregation before the tent of meeting, doing the work of the tabernacle.
They shall take charge of all the furnishings of the tent of meeting and carry out the duties on behalf of the Israelites, doing the work of the tabernacle.
I myself have taken the Levites from among the Israelites in place of every firstborn who opens the womb among the Israelites. The Levites shall be mine,
for every firstborn is mine. On the day I struck down every firstborn in the land of Egypt, I consecrated to myself every firstborn in Israel, both human and animal. They are mine. I am the LORD.
Register the sons of Levi by their ancestral houses and clans. Count every male a month old and older.
The sons of Merari by their clans: Mahli and Mushi. These are the clans of the Levites by their ancestral houses.
To Gershon belonged the clan of the Libnites and the clan of the Shimeites; these are the Gershonite clans.
The responsibility of the sons of Gershon at the tent of meeting was the tabernacle and the tent, its covering, the curtain at the entrance of the tent of meeting,
the hangings of the courtyard, which enclose the tabernacle and the altar on every side, the curtain at the entrance of the courtyard, and its ropes—together with all the work connected with them.
To Kohath belonged the clans of the Amramites, the Izharites, the Hebronites, and the Uzzielites; these are the Kohathite clans.
Counting every male a month old and older, they numbered 8,600, charged with the care of the sanctuary.
Their responsibility was the ark, the table, the lampstand, the altars, the utensils of the sanctuary used in ministering, the curtain, and all the work connected with them.
The chief leader of the Levites was Eleazar son of Aaron the priest; he had oversight of those charged with the care of the sanctuary.
The leader of the ancestral house of the Merarite clans was Zuriel son of Abihail. They were to camp on the north side of the tabernacle.
The sons of Merari were appointed to care for the frames of the tabernacle, its crossbars, posts, and bases, all its equipment, and all the work connected with them,
Moses, Aaron, and Aaron's sons were to camp in front of the tabernacle, toward the east, before the tent of meeting, guarding the sanctuary on behalf of the Israelites. Any outsider who came near was to be put to death.
The total number of the Levites registered by Moses and Aaron at the LORD's command, clan by clan, every male a month old and older, was 22,000.
The LORD said to Moses: Register every firstborn male of the Israelites a month old and older, and record their names.
Take the Levites for me—I am the LORD—in place of all the firstborn of the Israelites, and the livestock of the Levites in place of all the firstborn among the livestock of the Israelites.
So Moses registered every firstborn among the Israelites, as the LORD had commanded him.
The total number of firstborn males a month old and older, listed by name, came to 22,273.
Take the Levites in place of all the firstborn of the Israelites, and the livestock of the Levites in place of their livestock. The Levites shall be mine. I am the LORD.
As for the redemption of the 273 firstborn Israelites who exceed the number of the Levites,
collect five shekels for each person, by the sanctuary shekel, which is twenty gerahs.
Give the silver to Aaron and his sons as the redemption price for those who exceed the number.
So Moses collected the redemption money from those left over beyond the ones the Levites had redeemed.
From the firstborn of the Israelites he collected 1,365 shekels of silver, by the sanctuary shekel.
Moses gave the redemption money to Aaron and his sons at the LORD's command, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.
