The LORD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the first month of the second year after they came out of the land of Egypt. He said:
"Let the Israelites keep the Passover at its appointed time.
On the fourteenth day of this month, at twilight, you shall keep it at its appointed time. You shall keep it according to all its statutes and all its rules."
So Moses told the Israelites to keep the Passover,
and they kept the Passover in the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, at twilight, in the wilderness of Sinai. The Israelites did everything just as the LORD had commanded Moses.
But there were some men who were unclean because of a dead body, so they could not keep the Passover on that day. They came before Moses and Aaron that same day
and said to him, "We are unclean because of a dead body. Why should we be kept from presenting the LORD's offering at its appointed time along with the rest of the Israelites?"
"Say to the Israelites: If any one of you or your descendants is unclean because of a dead body, or is away on a long journey, he may still keep the LORD's Passover.
They shall keep it in the second month, on the fourteenth day, at twilight. They shall eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs.
They shall leave none of it until morning, and they shall not break any of its bones. They shall keep it according to every statute of the Passover.
But anyone who is clean and not on a journey, yet fails to keep the Passover, shall be cut off from his people, because he did not present the LORD's offering at its appointed time. That man will bear the guilt of his sin.
If a foreigner living among you wants to keep the LORD's Passover, he shall do so according to the statute of the Passover and its rule. You shall have one statute, both for the foreigner and for the native of the land."
On the day the tabernacle was set up, the cloud covered the tabernacle, the tent of the testimony. From evening until morning it appeared over the tabernacle like fire.
So it was continually: the cloud covered it, and by night it looked like fire.
Whenever the cloud lifted from above the tent, the Israelites would then set out, and wherever the cloud settled, there the Israelites camped.
At the LORD's command the Israelites set out, and at the LORD's command they camped. As long as the cloud rested over the tabernacle, they remained in camp.
Even when the cloud lingered over the tabernacle for many days, the Israelites kept the LORD's charge and did not set out.
Sometimes the cloud remained over the tabernacle only a few days; at the LORD's command they camped, and at the LORD's command they set out.
Sometimes the cloud stayed only from evening until morning, and when it lifted in the morning, they set out. Whether by day or by night, when the cloud lifted, they set out.
Whether it was two days, a month, or a longer time, as long as the cloud lingered over the tabernacle and settled upon it, the Israelites stayed in camp and did not set out; but when it lifted, they set out.
At the LORD's command they camped, and at the LORD's command they set out. They kept the LORD's charge, according to his command through Moses.
