The whole community of Israel set out from the wilderness of Sin, traveling by stages at the LORD's command, and camped at Rephidim. But there was no water for the people to drink.
So the people quarreled with Moses and said, "Give us water to drink!" Moses answered them, "Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you put the LORD to the test?"
But the people were thirsty for water there, and they grumbled against Moses. "Why did you ever bring us up out of Egypt," they said, "to kill me and my children and my livestock with thirst?"
Then Moses cried out to the LORD, "What am I to do with this people? A little more and they will stone me."
The LORD said to Moses, "Go on ahead of the people. Take some of the elders of Israel with you, and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go.
I will be standing there before you on the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink." So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel.
He named the place Massah and Meribah, because the Israelites quarreled there and because they tested the LORD, saying, "Is the LORD among us or not?"
Then the Amalekites came and fought against Israel at Rephidim.
Moses said to Joshua, "Choose men for us and go out to fight against Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand."
Joshua did as Moses had told him and fought against Amalek, while Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.
As long as Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed; but whenever he let his hand down, Amalek prevailed.
When Moses' hands grew heavy, they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on each side, so that his hands remained steady until sunset.
So Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.
Then the LORD said to Moses, "Write this down in a book as a reminder, and make sure Joshua hears it: I will completely blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven."
He said, "A hand upon the throne of the LORD! The LORD will be at war against Amalek from generation to generation."
