For the choirmaster. A maskil of David.

When Doeg the Edomite came to Saul and reported to him, saying, "David has gone to the house of Ahimelech."

Why do you boast of evil, you mighty man? The mercy of God endures all day long.

Your tongue plots destruction, like a sharpened razor, you worker of deceit.

You love evil more than good, and lying more than speaking what is right. Selah

You love every devouring word, you deceitful tongue.

But God will tear you down forever; he will snatch you up and pull you from your tent, and uproot you from the land of the living. Selah

The righteous will see and stand in awe, and they will laugh at him:

"Look at the man who would not make God his refuge, but trusted in his great wealth and grew strong in his own wickedness."

But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God; I trust in God's mercy forever and ever.

I will praise you forever, because you have acted; and in the presence of your faithful I will hope in your name, for it is good.

The psalm has a heading that links it to a specific event: Doeg the Edomite, who reported David to King Saul. According to 1 Samuel 21–22, Doeg was the chief shepherd of Saul’s flocks and was present at the sanctuary in Nob when David fled from Saul. He informed Saul that the priest Ahimelech had helped David with food and weapons. This led Saul to order a massacre of the priests in Nob—an order his own soldiers refused to carry out, but which Doeg himself executed by killing eighty-five priests (1 Sam 22:18–19).

Ahimelech was the high priest at Nob and a descendant of the family of Eli from Shiloh. His house served as an important cultic center after the ark of the covenant had been taken by the Philistines. Doeg is described as "edomitt" (הָאֲדֹמִי), indicating that he was a foreigner in Israel—possibly a convert or servant from Edom who had gained a trusted position at the court.

Nob (בֵּית אֲחִמֶלֶךְ – "the house of Ahimelech") was a priestly town located near Jerusalem, likely on the Mount of Olives or in its vicinity.
