Flee for safety, people of Benjamin, out of Jerusalem! Blow the ram's horn in Tekoa, raise a signal over Beth-haccherem, for disaster looms out of the north, a great destruction.
So lovely and delicate is Daughter Zion—and I will destroy her.
Shepherds and their flocks will come against her; they will pitch their tents all around her, each grazing his own portion.
"Prepare for holy battle against her! Up, let us attack at noon!" "Woe to us, for the day is fading, the evening shadows stretch long."
"Up, then, let us attack by night and destroy her palaces!"
For this is what the LORD of hosts says: Cut down her trees, throw up a siege ramp against Jerusalem. This is the city marked for punishment; there is nothing but oppression within her.
As a well keeps its water fresh, so she keeps her wickedness fresh. Violence and ruin resound in her; sickness and wounds are always before me.
Take warning, Jerusalem, or I will turn away from you in disgust and make you a wasteland, a land where no one lives.
This is what the LORD of hosts says: They will glean the remnant of Israel as thoroughly as a vine is stripped; reach your hand over the shoots again, like a grape-picker.
To whom can I speak and give warning, so that they will listen? Their ears are closed; they cannot pay attention. The word of the LORD has become an offense to them; they take no delight in it.
But I am filled with the wrath of the LORD; I am weary of holding it in. Pour it out on the children in the street, and on the gatherings of young men as well! For even husband with wife will be taken, the aged along with those full of years.
Their houses will be turned over to others, their fields and their wives as well, for I will stretch out my hand against those who live in the land, declares the LORD.
From the least of them to the greatest, all are greedy for unjust gain; from prophet to priest, all practice deceit.
They dress the wound of my people as though it were nothing. 'Peace, peace,' they say, when there is no peace.
Were they ashamed when they committed such abominations? No, they felt no shame at all; they did not even know how to blush. So they will fall among the fallen; when I punish them, they will go down, says the LORD.
This is what the LORD says: Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, where the good way lies, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But they said, "We will not walk in it."
I appointed watchmen over you: "Listen for the sound of the horn!" But they said, "We will not listen."
Therefore hear, you nations; take note, you assembly, of what will happen to them.
Hear, O earth: I am bringing disaster on this people, the fruit of their own schemes, because they have not listened to my words and have rejected my law.
What is frankincense from Sheba to me, or sweet cane from a distant land? Your burnt offerings are not acceptable; your sacrifices do not please me.
Therefore this is what the LORD says: I am setting stumbling blocks before this people. Fathers and sons alike will stumble over them; neighbor and friend will perish.
This is what the LORD says: Look, an army is coming from the land of the north; a great nation is stirring from the ends of the earth.
They grip bow and spear; they are cruel and show no mercy. Their noise roars like the sea as they ride on horses, drawn up like men for battle against you, Daughter Zion.
We have heard the report of them, and our hands hang limp. Anguish has seized us, pain like a woman in labor.
Do not go out into the fields, do not walk on the roads, for the enemy has a sword, and terror is on every side.
Daughter of my people, put on sackcloth and roll in ashes; mourn as for an only son, with bitter lament, for suddenly the destroyer will come upon us.
I have made you an assayer among my people, a fortified wall, that you may know and test their ways.
They are all hardened rebels, going about as slanderers. They are bronze and iron; all of them act corruptly.
The bellows blast fiercely, the lead is consumed by the fire, but the refining goes on in vain; the wicked are not purged away.
They are called rejected silver, because the LORD has rejected them.
