Why do the nations rage, and the peoples plot in vain?

The kings of the earth take their stand, and the rulers conspire together against the LORD and against his Anointed:

"Let us tear off their fetters and fling their cords away from us!"

He who sits enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord mocks them.

Then he speaks to them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath:

"I myself have installed my king on Zion, my holy mountain."

I will proclaim the LORD's decree. He said to me: "You are my Son; today I have begotten you.

Ask of me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession.

You will break them with an iron rod and shatter them like a potter's jar."

So now, you kings, be wise; be warned, you judges of the earth.

Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.

Kiss the Son, or he will be angry and you will perish on the way, for his wrath can flare up in a moment. Blessed are all who take refuge in him. [footnote: The word rendered "Son" here (Hebrew bar) is the Aramaic form; the phrase is difficult, and some understand it as "pay homage sincerely" or "kiss his feet."]

People

The psalm mentions kings and rulers (roznim) who unite against the Lord and his anointed one (mashiach). The anointed one primarily refers to the Davidic king in Jerusalem. In ancient Israel, kings were installed through anointing with oil, a ceremony that marked divine selection and authorization. This term later became central to messianic expectations. The psalm's dramatic structure presents several "voices": the rebellion of the nations (vv. 1–3), God’s response from heaven (vv. 4–6), the king’s proclamation of the divine decree (vv. 7–9), and a wisdom exhortation to the rulers of the earth (vv. 10–12).

Zion (צִיּוֹן) is mentioned as "my holy mountain" where God has installed his king (v. 6).
