Meanwhile the Philistines were fighting against Israel. The men of Israel fled before them, and many fell slain on Mount Gilboa.

The Philistines closed in on Saul and his sons, and they struck down Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchi-shua, the sons of Saul.

The fighting pressed hard against Saul. The archers found him, and he was badly wounded by them.[^1] [^1]: Or "and he was in great anguish because of the archers."

Saul said to his armor-bearer, "Draw your sword and run me through, or these uncircumcised men will come and run me through and make sport of me." But his armor-bearer would not do it, for he was terrified. So Saul took his own sword and fell on it.

When the armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he too fell on his sword and died with him.

So Saul died that day, together with his three sons, his armor-bearer, and all his men.

When the men of Israel across the valley and beyond the Jordan saw that the men of Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned their towns and fled. Then the Philistines came and settled in them.

The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the dead, they found Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount Gilboa.

They cut off his head and stripped off his armor, and they sent word throughout the land of the Philistines, carrying the news to the temples of their idols and to the people.

They put his armor in the temple of the Ashtoreths and fastened his body to the wall of Beth-shan.

But when the people of Jabesh-gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul,

all their fighting men set out and marched through the night. They took the bodies of Saul and his sons down from the wall of Beth-shan, brought them to Jabesh, and burned them there.

Then they took their bones and buried them under the tamarisk tree at Jabesh, and they fasted seven days.

The fact that they later buried the bones (v. 13) suggests the burning may have been partial, possibly to prevent further desecration of the mutilated bodies. A seven-day fast (v. 13) was a common mourning period in Israel.
