The LORD said to Samuel, "How long will you mourn for Saul, when I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go. I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem, for I have chosen one of his sons to be king."

But Samuel said, "How can I go? If Saul hears of it, he will kill me." The LORD said, "Take a heifer with you and say, 'I have come to sacrifice to the LORD.'

Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what to do. You are to anoint for me the one I point out to you."

So Samuel did what the LORD said and went to Bethlehem. The elders of the town came trembling to meet him and asked, "Do you come in peace?"

"In peace," he answered. "I have come to sacrifice to the LORD. Consecrate yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice." Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.

When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, "Surely here before the LORD stands his anointed one."

But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not look at his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not see as man sees: man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart."

Then Jesse called Abinadab and had him pass before Samuel. But Samuel said, "The LORD has not chosen this one either."

Jesse then had Shammah pass by, but Samuel said, "The LORD has not chosen this one either."

Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, "The LORD has not chosen these."

So he asked Jesse, "Are these all the young men you have?" "There is still the youngest," Jesse answered. "He is out tending the sheep." Samuel said, "Send for him. We will not sit down until he comes here."

So he sent for him and brought him in. He had a ruddy complexion, fine eyes, and a handsome face. And the LORD said, "Rise and anoint him; this is the one."

So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the LORD came powerfully upon David. Then Samuel set out and returned to Ramah.

Now the Spirit of the LORD had departed from Saul, and a harmful spirit from the LORD tormented him.

Saul's servants said to him, "Look, an evil spirit from God is tormenting you.

Let our lord give the word, and your servants here will look for someone who knows how to play the lyre. When the evil spirit from God comes upon you, he will play, and you will feel better."

So Saul said to his servants, "Find me someone who plays well and bring him to me."

One of the young men answered, "I have seen a son of Jesse of Bethlehem who knows how to play. He is a brave man and a warrior, wise in speech and handsome, and the LORD is with him."

Then Saul sent messengers to Jesse with this word: "Send me your son David, who is with the sheep."

So Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, a skin of wine, and a young goat, and sent them to Saul with his son David.

David came to Saul and entered his service. Saul loved him dearly, and David became one of his armor-bearers.

Then Saul sent word to Jesse: "Let David remain in my service, for I am pleased with him."

Whenever the spirit from God came upon Saul, David would take his lyre and play, and Saul would find relief and feel better, and the evil spirit would leave him.
