When David and his men reached Ziklag on the third day, they found that the Amalekites had raided the Negev and Ziklag. They had struck Ziklag and burned it down.

They had taken captive the women who were there, young and old alike, but had killed no one; they drove them off and went on their way.

When David and his men came to the town, there it was, burned to the ground, and their wives, sons, and daughters taken captive.

Then David and the men with him wept aloud until they had no strength left to weep.

David's two wives had also been taken captive—Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail, the widow of Nabal of Carmel.

David was in great distress, for the men were talking of stoning him; every one of them was bitter in spirit over his sons and daughters. But David found strength in the LORD his God.

David said to Abiathar the priest, son of Ahimelech, "Bring me the ephod." So Abiathar brought it to him,

and David inquired of the LORD, "Shall I pursue this raiding party? Will I overtake them?" "Pursue them," he answered. "You will surely overtake them and surely rescue the captives."

So David set out with the six hundred men who were with him, and they came to the Besor Valley, where the rest stayed behind.

David pressed on with four hundred men, while two hundred were too exhausted to cross the Besor Valley and stayed there.

They came across an Egyptian in the open country and brought him to David. They gave him bread to eat and water to drink,

along with a piece of pressed figs and two cakes of raisins. He ate, and his strength returned to him, for he had not eaten bread or drunk water for three days and three nights.

David asked him, "Who do you belong to, and where are you from?" He answered, "I am a young Egyptian, the slave of an Amalekite. My master abandoned me three days ago because I fell ill.

We raided the Negev of the Kerethites, the territory of Judah, and the Negev of Caleb, and we burned Ziklag."

David asked him, "Can you lead me down to this raiding party?" He said, "Swear to me by God that you will not kill me or hand me over to my master, and I will lead you down to them."

So he led him down, and there they were, sprawled all over the countryside, eating, drinking, and celebrating because of the great spoil they had taken from the land of the Philistines and the land of Judah.

David struck them down from dusk until the evening of the next day, and not one of them escaped except four hundred young men who mounted camels and fled.

David recovered everything the Amalekites had taken, and he rescued his two wives.

Nothing was missing—young or old, sons or daughters, plunder or anything else they had carried off. David brought it all back.

He also took all the flocks and herds, and his men drove them ahead of the other livestock, saying, "This is David's spoil."

Then David came to the two hundred men who had been too exhausted to follow him and had been left behind at the Besor Valley. They came out to meet David and the men with him, and as David approached, he greeted them.

But all the worthless scoundrels among the men who had gone with David said, "Since they did not go with us, we will not share with them any of the spoil we recovered—except that each man may take his wife and children and go."

David replied, "No, my brothers, you must not do that with what the LORD has given us. He protected us and handed over to us the raiders who came against us.

Who would listen to such a thing? The share of the man who goes into battle and the share of the man who stays with the supplies shall be the same; they shall share alike."

From that day on David made this a statute and an ordinance for Israel, and it remains so to this day.

When David reached Ziklag, he sent some of the spoil to his friends, the elders of Judah, with the message: "Here is a gift for you from the spoil of the LORD's enemies."

He sent it to those in Bethel, Ramoth of the Negev, and Jattir;

to those in Aroer, Siphmoth, and Eshtemoa;

to those in Racal, in the towns of the Jerahmeelites and the towns of the Kenites;

to those in Hormah, Bor Ashan, and Athach;

to those in Hebron; and to all the other places where David and his men had roamed.

People

Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail of Carmel were David’s two wives who were taken captive during the Amalekite raid (verse 5). Both were rescued when David recovered the plunder from the Amalekites.

Abiathar, the priest, son of Ahimelech, carried the ephod that David used to seek the Lord’s will regarding whether he should pursue the raiders (verses 7–8). God’s answer was a clear confirmation: "Pursue them! You will overtake them and rescue the captives" (verse 8).

The Egyptian slave (verses 11–15) was an abandoned servant of an Amalekite master. He had been sick for three days and left to die. After David gave him food and drink, he led David to the Amalekite camp in exchange for a promise of protection.

Ziklag was David’s base in the southern border region, which was plundered and burned by the Amalekites while David and his men were away (verses 1–3).

The Besor Ravine (נַחַל הַבְּשׂוֹר) served as a geographical dividing point where 200 exhausted men were left behind (verses 9–10, 21). This watercourse, usually identified with Wadi Gaza or Nahal Besor, flows westward toward the Mediterranean Sea. The name may mean "cool" or "glad tidings."

The cities mentioned in verses 27–31 form a network of settlements in southern Judah and the Negev region where David sent gifts from the plunder. The list includes Bethel (likely a southern town, not the northern sanctuary), Ramoth-negev, Jattir, Aroer, Siphmoth, Eshtemoa, Rakal, the towns of the Jerahmeelites, the towns of the Kenites, Hormah, Borashan, Athach, and Hebron. Events and Customs

The Amalekite raid (verses 1–2) took advantage of David’s men being away. They plundered the Negev region, including the land of the Kerethites, Judah, and Caleb’s Negev (verse 14). The text emphasizes that they did not kill anyone but took women and children captive—this was economically motivated, as captives could be sold into slavery or ransomed.

Distribution of war plunder became a point of contention when some of the men (called "wicked and worthless fellows" in verse 22) refused to share with the 200 who were too exhausted to fight. David’s principle that those who guarded the equipment should share equally with those who fought (verse 24) was established as a lasting statute in Israel: "חֹק וּמִשְׁפָּט" – "statute and ordinance" (verse 25).

Gifts to the elders of Judah (verses 26–31) were a strategic move by which David shared the plunder with his allies in the south. He called it "a blessing from the plunder of the Lord’s enemies" (verse 26).
