The company of the prophets said to Elisha, "Look, the place where we meet with you is too cramped for us.

Let us go to the Jordan, where each of us can cut a beam, and let us build a place there to live." "Go," he said.

Then one of them said, "Please come along with your servants." "I will come," he answered.

So he went with them. They came to the Jordan and began cutting down trees.

As one of them was felling a tree, the iron axhead fell into the water. "Oh no, my lord!" he cried out. "It was borrowed!"

The man of God asked, "Where did it fall?" When he showed him the place, Elisha cut a stick, threw it in there, and made the iron float.

"Lift it out," he said. So the man reached out his hand and took it.

Now the king of Aram was at war with Israel. He conferred with his officers and said, "I will set up my camp in such and such a place."

But the man of God sent word to the king of Israel: "Be careful not to pass by that place, for the Arameans are moving down there."

So the king of Israel sent word to the place the man of God had named. Time and again Elisha warned him, and he was on his guard there.

This enraged the king of Aram. He summoned his officers and demanded, "Tell me! Which of us is for the king of Israel?"

"None of us, my lord the king," said one of his officers. "It is Elisha, the prophet in Israel, who tells the king of Israel the very words you speak in your bedroom."

"Go and find out where he is," the king ordered, "so I can send men and capture him." The report came back: "He is in Dothan."

So he sent horses and chariots and a strong force there. They came by night and surrounded the city.

When the servant of the man of God got up early and went out, there was an army with horses and chariots surrounding the city. "Oh, my lord, what shall we do?" he cried to Elisha.

"Don't be afraid," the prophet answered. "Those who are with us are more than those who are with them."

Then Elisha prayed, "LORD, open his eyes so he may see." The LORD opened the servant's eyes, and he looked, and there was the mountain, full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.

As the Arameans came down toward him, Elisha prayed to the LORD, "Strike this army with blindness." So he struck them with blindness, as Elisha had asked.

Elisha told them, "This is not the road, and this is not the city. Follow me, and I will lead you to the man you are looking for." And he led them to Samaria.

When they had entered the city, Elisha said, "LORD, open the eyes of these men so they may see." The LORD opened their eyes, and they looked, and there they were, inside Samaria.

When the king of Israel saw them, he asked Elisha, "Shall I kill them, my father? Shall I kill them?"

"Do not kill them," he answered. "Would you kill men you have captured with your own sword and bow? Set food and water before them so they may eat and drink and then go back to their master."

So he prepared a great feast for them, and after they had eaten and drunk, he sent them away, and they returned to their master. And the raiding bands from Aram stopped invading Israel's territory.

Some time later, Ben-Hadad king of Aram mobilized his entire army, marched up, and laid siege to Samaria.

There was a great famine in the city; the siege lasted so long that a donkey's head sold for eighty shekels of silver, and a quarter of a kab of seed pods for five shekels. [Footnote: Hebrew literally "dove's dung," probably a term for a cheap wild plant or seed pod.]

As the king of Israel was passing along the wall, a woman cried out to him, "Help me, my lord the king!"

The king replied, "May the LORD not help you! Where could I get help for you? From the threshing floor? From the winepress?"

Then he asked her, "What is the matter?" She answered, "This woman said to me, 'Give up your son so we may eat him today, and tomorrow we'll eat my son.'

So we cooked my son and ate him. The next day I said to her, 'Give up your son so we may eat him,' but she had hidden him."

When the king heard the woman's words, he tore his robes. As he went along the wall, the people saw that he had sackcloth under his clothes, next to his skin.

He said, "May God deal with me ever so severely if the head of Elisha son of Shaphat remains on his shoulders today!"

Now Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him. The king sent a messenger ahead, but before he arrived, Elisha said to the elders, "Don't you see how this murderer's son has sent someone to cut off my head? Look, when the messenger comes, shut the door and hold it shut against him. Is not the sound of his master's footsteps right behind him?"

While he was still speaking to them, the messenger came down to him. And the king said, "This disaster is from the LORD. Why should I wait for the LORD any longer?"

People

Elisha’s servant is mentioned in verses 15–17 without a name. Tradition sometimes identifies him with Gehazi, but this is problematic given that Gehazi was struck with leprosy in chapter 5:27. The servant represents the ordinary believer who needs spiritual insight to see God’s protection.

Ben-Hadad, king of Aram (verse 24) was likely Ben-Hadad II or possibly Ben-Hadad III, who reigned in Damascus. The name "Ben-Hadad" (בֶּן־הֲדַד, "son of Hadad") was a dynastic title linked to the Aramean storm god Hadad. Assyrian inscriptions from this period mention several conflicts with Aramean kings.

The sons of the prophets (בְנֵי־הַנְּבִיאִים, "sons of the prophets") mentioned at the beginning were a group living in community under Elisha’s leadership. Their need for larger living quarters testifies to the growth of their movement.

Places

The Jordan Valley (verses 2–4) was covered with dense forest in biblical times, containing many tree species suitable for construction. The area was significantly more wooded than it is today, making it natural to obtain building materials there.

Dothan (דֹתָן, verse 13) lay about 15 kilometers north of Samaria along an important trade route. Tell Dothan has been archaeologically excavated and shows continuous settlement from the Bronze Age. The site is located in a fertile valley surrounded by hills, which explains the military strategy of encirclement.

Samaria (שֹׁמְרוֹן) was the capital of the Northern Kingdom, founded by Omri around 880 B.C. The city was heavily fortified and situated on a hill that made it difficult to capture. Archaeological excavations at Tell el-Sultan/Sebastiye have uncovered massive city walls and royal structures from this period.

Events and Customs

Borrowing tools (verse 5) was common practice. That the axe head was "borrowed" (שָׁאוּל) explains the servant’s despair—he was responsible for replacing the lost tool, which could have been financially devastating for a poor prophet’s disciple.

Siege warfare, described from verse 24 onward, was standard military practice in ancient times. The goal was to starve the population into surrender. The grotesque prices mentioned in verse 25 illustrate the desperation: a donkey’s head (normally considered unclean) cost eighty shekels of silver, and a quarter kab of "dove droppings" (חֲרִיּוֹנִים/דִּבְיוֹנִים – the ketiv/qere variant דִּבְיוֹנִים may refer to a type of legume or onion, alternatively literally droppings used as fuel) cost five shekels.

Cannibalism during siege (verses 28–29) was the ultimate consequence of extreme famine and is documented in other ancient texts. Moses had warned about this as a curse for disobedience (Deuteronomy 28:53–57), giving the event theological significance.

Sackcloth beneath garments (verse 30) shows that the king was already practicing mourning and repentance rituals in secret, even though he publicly appeared capable of action.

Key Terms

Terror (סַנְוֵרִים, verse 18) is translated as "blindness" and occurs only here and in Genesis 19:11. The word probably does not describe total blindness but rather a disorientation or confusion that prevented the soldiers from recognizing their surroundings and Elisha.

"Open his eyes" (פְּקַח־נָא אֶת־עֵינָיו, verse 17) refers to spiritual sight that reveals invisible reality—chariots of fire and horses symbolize God’s heavenly armies.

"Son of a murderer" (בֶּן־הַֽמְרַצֵּחַ, verse 32) is Elisha’s description of the king (likely Joram), probably referring to the crimes of his parents Ahab and Jezebel.
