What misery is mine! I am like one gathering summer fruit after the harvest, like one gleaning the vineyard when the grapes are gone: not a cluster left to eat, not one of the early figs I crave.
The faithful have vanished from the land; not one upright person remains. They all lie in wait for blood; each one hunts his own brother with a net.
Both hands are skilled at evil. The official demands his price, the judge takes his bribe, the powerful man dictates what he wants—together they weave it tight.
The best of them is like a briar, the most upright a hedge of thorns. The day your watchmen warned of has come, the day of your reckoning. Now confusion is upon them.
Put no trust in a neighbor; rely on no friend. Guard the words of your mouth even from the wife who lies in your arms.
For a son treats his father with contempt, a daughter rises against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. A man's enemies are the members of his own household.
But as for me, I will look to the LORD; I will wait for the God of my salvation. My God will hear me.
Do not gloat over me, my enemy! Though I have fallen, I will rise. Though I sit in darkness, the LORD is my light.
I will bear the LORD's wrath, for I have sinned against him, until he takes up my cause and secures my justice. He will bring me out into the light; I will see his righteousness.
Then my enemy will see it and be covered with shame—she who said to me, "Where is the LORD your God?" My eyes will look on her; now she will be trampled down like mud in the streets.
The day is coming to rebuild your walls; on that day your boundary will be extended.
On that day they will come to you from Assyria and the cities of Egypt, from Egypt to the Euphrates, from sea to sea and mountain to mountain.
But the land will become a desolation because of those who live in it, because of the fruit of their deeds.
Shepherd your people with your staff, the flock of your inheritance, who dwell alone in a forest amid fertile pastures. Let them graze in Bashan and Gilead as in days long past.
As in the days when you came out of Egypt, I will show them my wonders.
The nations will see and be ashamed, for all their might will count for nothing. They will put their hands over their mouths; their ears will be deaf.
They will lick the dust like a snake, like creatures that crawl on the ground. They will come trembling out of their strongholds; they will turn in dread to the LORD our God, and they will fear you.
Who is a God like you, who pardons guilt and passes over the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not hold on to your anger forever, for you delight in mercy.
You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our iniquities underfoot and hurl all our sins into the depths of the sea.
You will show faithfulness to Jacob and mercy to Abraham, as you swore to our fathers in days long ago.
