The word of the LORD that came to Hosea son of Beeri in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam son of Joash, king of Israel.

When the LORD first spoke through Hosea, the LORD said to him: "Go, take for yourself a wife of prostitution and children of prostitution, for the land commits great prostitution by turning away from the LORD."

So he went and took Gomer daughter of Diblaim, and she conceived and bore him a son.

And the LORD said to him, "Name him Jezreel, for in a little while I will punish the house of Jehu for the blood shed at Jezreel, and I will put an end to the kingdom of the house of Israel.

On that day I will break Israel's bow in the Valley of Jezreel."

She conceived again and bore a daughter. And the LORD said to him, "Name her No Mercy, for I will no longer show mercy to the house of Israel; I will certainly not forgive them.[^1] [^1]: Or "that I should in any way forgive them"; the Hebrew clause is difficult and has also been understood as "I will utterly take them away."

But I will show mercy to the house of Judah, and I will save them by the LORD their God. I will not save them by bow or sword or battle, by horses or horsemen."

After she had weaned No Mercy, she conceived and bore a son.

And the LORD said, "Name him Not My People,[^1] for you are not my people, and I will not be your God.[^2] [^1]: Hebrew Lo-Ammi. [^2]: Hebrew "and I will not be yours"; the wording echoes the divine name revealed in Exodus 3:14.

People

Hosea ben Beeri is the prophet who receives God’s word. The name הוֹשֵׁעַ (Hoshea) means "salvation" or "he saves"—the same root name as Joshua and Jesus. His father’s name, Beeri (בְּאֵרִי), may mean "my well."

Gomer bat Diblaim is the woman Hosea is commanded to marry (v. 3). The name Gomer may be linked to the Hebrew verb meaning "to complete" or "to finish." Diblaim could mean "two fig cakes"—some scholars view this as a symbolic name, but it may equally well be an ordinary personal name. That she is called אֵשֶׁת זְנוּנִים (eshet zenunim, "a wife of whoredoms") has been debated: Was she already a prostitute, or does this describe her future behavior? The text allows for both interpretations.

Jeroboam II ben Joash is mentioned in verse 1 as the reigning king of Israel when Hosea received his call. He belonged to the dynasty of Jehu, which is directly relevant to the judgment announced in verse 4.

Places

Jezreel (יִזְרְעֶאל) is the name God commands for Hosea’s first son (v. 4). The name means "God sows" or "God will sow." The Jezreel Valley was Israel’s most fertile agricultural region and a strategic corridor between the coast and the Jordan Valley.

The place had a dark history connected to the dynasty of Jehu. It was in Jezreel that King Ahab stole Naboth’s vineyard after Jezebel arranged Naboth’s death (1 Kings 21). Later, Jehu carried out his bloody coup precisely there, killing King Joram, Jezebel, and Ahab’s seventy sons (2 Kings 9–10). By naming his first child Jezreel, Hosea proclaims that the bloodguilt from Jehu’s massacre will soon be repaid upon his descendants (vv. 4–5).

לֹא עַמִּי (Lo-Ammi) means "not my people" (v. 9). This name reverses the very covenant formula from Sinai: "You shall be my people, and I will be your God" (Exod 6:7). It is a shocking termination of the covenant relationship.

Chapter-Specific Findings

The dynasty of Jehu ended with the murder of Zechariah ben Jeroboam in 746/745 BC, only a few months after his father’s death—an fulfillment of the prophecy in verse 4 that the blood of Jezreel would be avenged upon the house of Jehu. Assyrian annals from Tiglath-Pileser III (745–727 BC) confirm the political instability that struck Israel shortly after Hosea’s call.
