An oracle concerning Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum of Elkosh.
The LORD is a jealous and avenging God; the LORD takes vengeance and is filled with wrath. The LORD takes vengeance on his foes and holds his fury against his enemies.
The LORD is slow to anger but great in power; he will by no means leave the guilty unpunished. His way is in whirlwind and storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet.
He rebukes the sea and dries it up; he makes all the rivers run dry. Bashan and Carmel wither, and the blossom of Lebanon fades away.
The mountains quake before him, and the hills dissolve. The earth heaves at his presence, the world and all who live in it.
Who can stand before his fury? Who can endure the heat of his anger? His wrath is poured out like fire, and the rocks are shattered before him.
The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who take refuge in him.
But with a sweeping flood he will bring her place to an end, and he will pursue his enemies into darkness.
Why do you scheme against the LORD? He himself will make an end of it; trouble will not rise up a second time.
Though they are tangled together like thorns and soaked in their drink, they will be devoured like stubble, fully dry.
From you came the one who plots evil against the LORD, who counsels wickedness.
This is what the LORD says: Though they are strong and many, they will be cut down and pass away. Though I have afflicted you, I will afflict you no more.
Now I will break his yoke from your neck and tear your chains apart.
And this is what the LORD commands concerning you: Your name will have no offspring. I will cut off the carved image and the cast idol from the house of your gods. I will make your grave, for you are contemptible.
