In the eighth month of the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came to the prophet Zechariah son of Berechiah, son of Iddo:

The LORD was furious with your fathers.

So tell them: This is what the LORD of hosts says: Return to me, declares the LORD of hosts, and I will return to you, says the LORD of hosts.

Do not be like your fathers. The earlier prophets called out to them: This is what the LORD of hosts says: Turn now from your evil ways and your evil deeds. But they would not listen or pay attention to me, declares the LORD.

Your fathers—where are they now? And the prophets—do they live forever?

But my words and my decrees, which I commanded my servants the prophets—did they not overtake your fathers? Then they repented and said, "The LORD of hosts has dealt with us as he determined to do, according to our ways and our deeds."

On the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month, the month of Shebat, in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came to the prophet Zechariah son of Berechiah, son of Iddo:

In the night I had a vision: there before me was a man riding on a red horse. He was standing among the myrtle trees in the ravine, and behind him were horses—red, sorrel, and white.

I asked, "What are these, my lord?" And the angel who was speaking with me said, "I will show you what they are."

Then the man standing among the myrtle trees answered, "These are the ones the LORD has sent to patrol the earth."

And they reported to the angel of the LORD who was standing among the myrtle trees, "We have patrolled the earth, and the whole earth lies at rest and at peace."

Then the angel of the LORD said, "LORD of hosts, how long will you withhold mercy from Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, with which you have been angry these seventy years?"

And the LORD answered the angel who was speaking with me, and his words were kind words, words of comfort.

Then the angel who was speaking with me said, "Proclaim this: The LORD of hosts says: I am jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion with a burning jealousy,

and I am fiercely angry with the nations that sit secure. I was only a little angry, but they added to the harm.

Therefore this is what the LORD says: I have returned to Jerusalem with mercy. My house will be rebuilt there, declares the LORD of hosts, and the measuring line will be stretched out over Jerusalem.

Proclaim this as well: The LORD of hosts says: My cities will again overflow with prosperity. The LORD will again comfort Zion and again choose Jerusalem.

People

Darius (Darius I) is mentioned as the Persian king during whose reign Zechariah received his prophecies (v. 1, 7). Darius I (522–486 B.C.) was the Persian great king who consolidated the empire after a period of rebellion. Under his rule, the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem resumed, as confirmed both in Ezra 4–6 and in Persian administrative documents.

Zechariah son of Berechiah son of Iddo (v. 1, 7) is introduced with his full genealogy. The name Zechariah (זְכַרְיָה) means "the Lord remembers," which is thematically relevant to the chapter’s message that God remembers Jerusalem. Iddo is mentioned in Nehemiah 12:4 and 12:16 among the priests who returned from exile, placing Zechariah within a priestly lineage.

Events and Customs

The reference to "the seventy years" (v. 12) points to the period from Jerusalem’s destruction in 586 B.C. until the time of the prophecy around 520–519 B.C.
