In the tenth year, in the tenth month, on the twelfth day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me:

Son of man, set your face against Pharaoh king of Egypt, and prophesy against him and against all of Egypt.

Speak and say: Thus says the Lord GOD: Look, I am against you, Pharaoh king of Egypt, you great monster sprawling in the midst of your channels, who says, "The Nile is mine; I made it for myself."

I will put hooks in your jaws and make the fish of your channels cling to your scales. I will haul you up out of your channels with all the fish of your channels clinging to your scales.

I will fling you out into the wilderness, you and all the fish of your channels. You will fall on the open field and not be gathered or picked up. I give you as food to the beasts of the earth and the birds of the sky.

Then all who live in Egypt will know that I am the LORD, because they have been a staff of reed to the house of Israel.

When they grasped you in their hand, you splintered and tore up their shoulders; when they leaned on you, you broke and left their backs wrenched.

Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: I am bringing a sword against you, and I will cut off from you both man and beast.

The land of Egypt will become a desolate ruin, and they will know that I am the LORD—because he said, "The Nile is mine, and I made it."

Therefore I am against you and against your channels, and I will make the land of Egypt an utter waste and desolation, from Migdol to Syene, as far as the border of Cush.

No human foot will pass through it, and no animal's foot will pass through it; it will be uninhabited for forty years.

I will make the land of Egypt a desolation among desolate lands, and her cities will lie desolate for forty years among ruined cities. I will scatter the Egyptians among the nations and disperse them through the lands.

For thus says the Lord GOD: At the end of forty years I will gather the Egyptians from the peoples where they were scattered.

I will restore the fortunes of Egypt and bring them back to the land of Pathros, the land of their origin, and there they will be a lowly kingdom.

It will be the lowliest of the kingdoms and will never again raise itself above the nations. I will make them so small that they will never again rule over the nations.

Egypt will no longer be a source of confidence for the house of Israel, a reminder of their guilt whenever they turned to her for help. Then they will know that I am the Lord GOD.

In the twenty-seventh year, in the first month, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me:

Son of man, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has made his army labor hard against Tyre. Every head was rubbed bare and every shoulder chafed raw, yet neither he nor his army got any wages from Tyre for the labor he expended against it.

Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: I am giving the land of Egypt to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. He will carry off her wealth, seize her spoil, and take her plunder; that will be the wages for his army.

As the payment for his labor, I have given him the land of Egypt, because they worked for me, declares the Lord GOD.

On that day I will make a horn sprout for the house of Israel, and I will open your mouth among them. Then they will know that I am the LORD.

People

Pharaoh is mentioned as the addressee of the prophecy, and based on the dating in verse 1 (587 B.C.), it likely refers to Hophra (Apries, reign 589–570 B.C.). Hophra was the pharaoh who sent an Egyptian army to aid Jerusalem during Nebuchadnezzar's siege, providing temporary relief before the siege resumed (Jer 37:5–8). Hophra is known from Egyptian sources and the Greek historian Herodotus, who describes his failed military campaigns and ultimately his downfall through an internal revolt.

Nebuchadnezzar (verses 18–20) was king of Babylon from 605–562 B.C. and the most powerful ruler of his time. His siege of Tyre lasted thirteen years (c. 585–572 B.C.) and ended without the wealth he had expected, as the city managed to negotiate a settlement. Ezekiel presents Egypt as God's compensation to Nebuchadnezzar for this effort.

Egypt had repeatedly disappointed its allies by promising help they could not or would not give.

The siege of Tyre (verse 18) is described with vivid details: soldiers with shaved heads and scraped shoulders from carrying siege equipment and protecting themselves from projectiles. This prolonged siege is confirmed in Babylonian sources and represented an enormous expenditure of resources without corresponding gain, since Tyre's wealth could be evacuated by sea.

Tannin (הַתַּנִּם הַגָּדוֹל, verse 3) is often translated "sea monster" or "crocodile." In the Egyptian context, the crocodile was a royal symbol, and the god Sobek was depicted as a crocodile. By calling pharaoh a tannin that will be dragged up with hooks, Ezekiel reverses Egyptian royal iconography and reduces the pharaoh to an animal that is caught.
