Show the river's pathLife-giving water from God's house

Ezekiel sees in a vision a river flowing out from the temple, growing into a mighty stream that gives life to everything it touches—even the Dead Sea. The vision points to God's blessing flowing out to the whole world.

The Water Springs Forth

Water flowed out from under the threshold of the temple toward the east. It ran on the south side of the altar.

To the Ankles (1000 cubits)

The man measured 1000 cubits and led Ezekiel through the water—it reached to his ankles.

After another 1000 cubits, the water reached to the knees.

After another 1000 cubits, the water reached to the hips.

A River to Swim In (4000 cubits)

After another 1000 cubits, it had become a river that could not be crossed on foot—a river to swim in.

Trees on Both Banks

On both sides of the river grew very many trees.

The Dead Sea Comes Alive

The water flows down to the Arabah and out into the Dead Sea. When it reaches there, the water becomes fresh. Everything that lives will live wherever the river goes.

Fishermen by the Sea

Fishermen will stand along the shore from En-Gedi to En-Eglaim. There will be places for spreading nets, with fish of many kinds—like in the Great Sea.

Trees Along the River

Fruit trees of every kind will grow along the river. Their leaves will not wither and their fruit will never fail. Each month they will bear fresh fruit, because the water comes from the sanctuary.

Then he brought me back to the entrance of the temple, and there was water flowing out from under the threshold of the temple toward the east, for the temple faced east. The water was running down from under the south side of the temple, south of the altar.
He led me out through the north gate and brought me around the outside to the outer gate that faces east, and I saw water trickling out on the south side.
As the man went eastward with a measuring line in his hand, he measured off a thousand cubits and led me through the water, and it came up to my ankles.
He measured another thousand and led me through the water, and it came up to my knees. He measured another thousand and led me through, and it came up to my waist.
He measured another thousand, and now it was a river I could not cross, for the water had risen deep enough to swim in—a river that could not be crossed.
He said to me, "Son of man, do you see this?" Then he led me back to the bank of the river.
When I came back, I saw a great many trees along both banks of the river.
He said to me, "This water flows out toward the eastern region and goes down into the Arabah, and where it enters the sea, the sea of stagnant water, the water is made fresh.
Every living creature that swarms wherever the river flows will live. There will be great numbers of fish, because this water reaches there and makes the waters fresh; wherever the river flows, everything will live.
Fishermen will stand along its shore; from En-gedi to En-eglaim there will be places for spreading nets. Its fish will be of many kinds, like the fish of the Great Sea, exceedingly many.
But its swamps and marshes will not be made fresh; they are left for salt.
Along the river, on both banks, all kinds of fruit trees will grow. Their leaves will not wither, and their fruit will never fail. Every month they will bear fresh fruit, because its waters flow from the sanctuary. Their fruit will be for food and their leaves for healing."
Thus says the Lord GOD: These are the boundaries by which you shall divide the land as an inheritance among the twelve tribes of Israel; Joseph shall receive two portions.
You shall inherit it, each one alike with his brother, this land that I swore with uplifted hand to give to your fathers. This land shall fall to you as an inheritance.
This shall be the boundary of the land: On the north side it runs from the Great Sea by way of Hethlon to Lebo-hamath, on to Zedad,
Berothah and Sibraim, which lies between the border of Damascus and the border of Hamath, as far as Hazer-hatticon, which is on the border of Hauran.
So the boundary shall run from the sea to Hazar-enan, along the northern border of Damascus, with the border of Hamath to the north. This is the north side.
On the east side the boundary runs between Hauran and Damascus, and along the Jordan between Gilead and the land of Israel, down to the eastern sea, as far as Tamar. This is the east side.
On the south side it runs from Tamar to the waters of Meribath-kadesh, then along the wadi to the Great Sea. This is the south side, toward the Negev.
On the west side the Great Sea shall be the boundary, running up to a point opposite Lebo-hamath. This is the west side.
You shall divide this land among yourselves according to the tribes of Israel.
You shall allot it as an inheritance for yourselves and for the foreigners living among you who have had children among you. You shall treat them as native-born Israelites; along with you they shall be allotted an inheritance among the tribes of Israel.
In whatever tribe a foreigner has settled, there you shall give him his inheritance, declares the Lord GOD.
