Look! The LORD is laying the earth waste and stripping it bare; he twists its face out of shape and scatters those who live on it.

It will be the same for the people as for the priest, the same for the slave as for his master, for the servant girl as for her mistress, for the buyer as for the seller, for the lender as for the borrower, for the creditor as for the debtor.

The earth will be utterly laid waste, utterly plundered, for the LORD has spoken this word.

The earth mourns and withers; the world languishes and fades; the exalted of the earth's people languish.

The earth lies polluted under those who live on it, for they have transgressed the laws, violated the statute, broken the everlasting covenant.

Therefore a curse devours the earth, and those who live in it bear their guilt. Therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned away, and only a few are left.

The new wine dries up, the vine withers, and all the merry-hearted groan.

The joyous beat of the tambourines has stopped, the noise of revelers has ended, the glad music of the lyre is silent.

No more do they drink wine with song; strong drink turns bitter to those who drink it.

The city of chaos lies shattered; every house is shut, no one can enter.

In the streets they cry out for wine; all joy has grown dark, the gladness of the earth is gone.

Desolation is all that is left in the city; the gate is battered into ruins.

For so it will be in the midst of the earth, among the nations: like the beating of an olive tree, like the gleanings when the grape harvest is over.

They lift up their voices, they sing for joy; from the west they shout over the majesty of the LORD.

So in the east give glory to the LORD; in the islands of the sea glorify the name of the LORD, the God of Israel.

From the ends of the earth we hear songs: "Glory to the Righteous One!" But I said, "I waste away, I waste away! Woe to me! Traitors have betrayed, treacherously the traitors have betrayed."

Terror, pit, and snare are upon you, you who live on the earth!

Whoever flees at the sound of terror will fall into the pit, and whoever climbs out of the pit will be caught in the snare. For the windows of heaven are opened, and the foundations of the earth are shaking.

The earth is utterly broken, the earth is split apart, the earth totters and reels.

The earth staggers like a drunkard, it sways like a hut. Its rebellion weighs heavy upon it; it falls, never to rise again.

On that day the LORD will punish the host of heaven in heaven, and the kings of the earth on the earth.

They will be herded together like prisoners in a pit, shut up in prison, and after many days they will be punished.

Then the moon will be ashamed and the sun disgraced, for the LORD of hosts will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and his glory will shine before his elders.
