A song of ascents. Remember, LORD, on David's behalf, all the hardships he endured,

how he swore to the LORD and made this vow to the Mighty One of Jacob:

"I will not enter my house or lie down on my bed,

I will give no sleep to my eyes, no slumber to my eyelids,

until I find a place for the LORD, a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob."

We heard of it in Ephrathah; we found it in the fields of Jaar.^[Jaar is another name for Kiriath-jearim, the town where the ark of the covenant was kept for many years.]

Let us go to his dwelling place; let us worship at his footstool.

Rise up, LORD, and come to your resting place, you and the ark of your might.

May your priests be clothed with righteousness, and may your faithful ones shout for joy.

For the sake of David your servant, do not turn away the face of your anointed.

The LORD swore an oath to David, a sure oath he will not revoke: "One of your own descendants I will set on your throne.

If your sons keep my covenant and the decrees I teach them, then their sons also will sit on your throne forever."

For the LORD has chosen Zion; he has desired it for his dwelling:

"This is my resting place forever; here I will sit enthroned, for I have desired it.

I will richly bless her provisions; her poor I will satisfy with bread.

I will clothe her priests with salvation, and her faithful ones will sing aloud for joy.

There I will make a horn grow for David; I have prepared a lamp for my anointed one.

I will clothe his enemies with shame, but on him the crown will shine."

The expression "your anointed" (מְשִׁיחֶךָ, meshichecha) in verses 10 and 17 refers to the reigning Davidic king and connects the psalm to the messianic expectation that grew within Israel.

The Mighty One of Jacob (אֲבִיר יַעֲקֹב, avir ya'akov) in verses 2 and 5 is an ancient title for God that goes back to the patriarchal narratives (Genesis 49:24). This title emphasizes God's power and faithfulness across generations.

Places

Ephrathah and the fields of Jaar (verse 6) refer to areas connected with the history of the ark of the covenant.
