A psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I lack nothing.

He lets me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters.

He restores my soul. He guides me along right paths for his name's sake.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,* I fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. [*Footnote: Or "the darkest valley"; the Hebrew word can mean deep darkness as well as the shadow of death.]

You set a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

Surely goodness and mercy will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for length of days.* [*Footnote: Or "as long as I live."]

רֹעִי (ro'i) – "my shepherd": The image of the shepherd was deeply rooted in Israel's culture. In the ancient Near East, "shepherd" was also a common title for kings—Akkadian and Sumerian texts describe kings as "shepherds over the people." When the psalmist calls the LORD his shepherd, he acknowledges God as the ultimate king and caretaker.

גֵּיא צַלְמָוֶת (ge' tsalmawet) – "the valley of the shadow of death": This expression can mean either "deep darkness" or "the shadow of death." It describes the dangerous, narrow valleys in Judea's wilderness where predators lurked and bandits could attack. For a shepherd in Israel, such valleys were a daily reality.

שִׁבְטְךָ וּמִשְׁעַנְתֶּךָ (shivtekha umish'antekha) – "your rod and your staff": The shepherd's two tools had different functions. The rod (shevet) was a shorter weapon used for defense against predators, while the staff (mish'enet) was a longer stick with a hook, used to guide and rescue sheep from dangerous situations.

Events and Customs

Anointing with oil (v. 5): Anointing a guest's head with oil was an honorific gesture in Eastern hospitality. The oil—often scented—was refreshing in the warm climate and signaled that the guest was highly valued. This custom is also mentioned in Luke 7:46. In a shepherdly context, shepherds would also anoint sheep's wounds with oil for healing.

Sharing a meal with enemies present: The image in verse 5 of a prepared table "in the presence of my enemies" reflects the ancient code of honor. Being invited to a meal by a powerful host provided protection—no one would dare attack someone under their hospitality. The cup that "overflows" symbolizes abundance and generosity beyond what is necessary.
