From there Abraham journeyed toward the land of the Negev and settled between Kadesh and Shur, and he lived as a stranger in Gerar.

And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, "She is my sister." So Abimelech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah.

But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night and said to him, "You are a dead man because of the woman you have taken, for she is a married woman."

Now Abimelech had not gone near her, so he said, "Lord, will you kill even a righteous nation?

Did he not say to me, 'She is my sister'? And she herself said, 'He is my brother.' With an innocent heart and clean hands I have done this."

Then God said to him in the dream, "Yes, I know that you did this with an innocent heart, and it was I who kept you from sinning against me. That is why I did not let you touch her.

Now return the man's wife, for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you and you will live. But if you do not return her, know that you shall surely die, you and all who are yours."

Abimelech rose early in the morning, called all his servants, and told them all these things in their hearing, and the men were terrified.

Then Abimelech summoned Abraham and said to him, "What have you done to us? How have I wronged you, that you have brought such great guilt on me and my kingdom? You have done things to me that should never be done."

And Abimelech said to Abraham, "What did you have in mind, that you did this?"

Abraham said, "I thought, surely there is no fear of God in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife.

Besides, she really is my sister, the daughter of my father though not the daughter of my mother, and she became my wife.

And when God had me wander from my father's house, I said to her, 'This is the kindness you must show me: wherever we go, say of me, He is my brother.'"

Then Abimelech took sheep and cattle, male and female servants, and gave them to Abraham, and he returned Sarah his wife to him.

And Abimelech said, "See, my land lies before you. Settle wherever you please."

And to Sarah he said, "I have given your brother a thousand pieces of silver. It is a covering of the eyes for you before all who are with you; in every way you are cleared."

Then Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelech, his wife, and his female servants, so that they bore children again;

for the LORD had completely closed every womb in Abimelech's household because of Sarah, Abraham's wife.

Abimelech is the name of the king of Gerar. The name means "my father is king" and likely served as a dynastic title for rulers in the region. Abraham is referred to here for the first time as נָבִיא (navi), "prophet" (v. 7). This is the earliest occurrence of this word in the Bible. The prophet's role is defined here primarily through intercession—Abraham is to pray for Abimelech so that he may live. This shows that the prophet functions as an intermediary between God and people.

Places

Gerar was located in the southwestern part of Canaan, between Kadesh and Shur. Archaeological excavations at Tell Haror (often identified with Gerar) have revealed significant Bronze Age settlements.
