Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Cushite woman he had married—for he had married a Cushite woman.

They said, "Has the LORD spoken only through Moses? Has he not spoken through us as well?" And the LORD heard it.

Now Moses was a very humble man, more so than anyone else on the face of the earth.

Suddenly the LORD said to Moses, Aaron, and Miriam, "Come out, the three of you, to the tent of meeting." So the three of them went out.

Then the LORD came down in a pillar of cloud and stood at the entrance of the tent. He called Aaron and Miriam, and the two of them stepped forward.

He said, "Listen to my words: When there is a prophet among you, I, the LORD, make myself known to him in a vision; I speak with him in a dream.

Not so with my servant Moses; he is faithful in all my house.

With him I speak face to face, plainly and not in riddles; he sees the form of the LORD. Why, then, were you not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?"

The anger of the LORD burned against them, and he departed.

When the cloud lifted from above the tent, there stood Miriam, her skin diseased, white as snow. Aaron turned toward her and saw that she was diseased.

Aaron said to Moses, "Please, my lord, do not hold against us this sin we have so foolishly committed.

Do not let her be like a stillborn child, coming from the womb with its flesh half wasted away."

So Moses cried out to the LORD, "Please, God, heal her!"

The LORD answered Moses, "If her father had spit in her face, would she not be in disgrace for seven days? Let her be confined outside the camp for seven days; after that she may be brought back in."

So Miriam was confined outside the camp for seven days, and the people did not move on until she was brought back.

After that the people set out from Hazeroth and camped in the Desert of Paran.

People

Miriam appears in this chapter as the initiator of criticism against Moses, which is suggested by her name being mentioned first in verse 1 and by the fact that she alone was struck with leprosy. She was a significant figure in Israelite tradition—referred to as a prophetess in Exodus 15:20 and counted among the leaders of Israel alongside Moses and Aaron (Micah 6:4). Her prominent role makes the conflict especially serious.

The Cushite woman whom Moses had taken as his wife has been the subject of much discussion. "Cush" (כּוּשׁ) usually refers to the area south of Egypt, roughly modern-day Sudan/Ethiopia. Some scholars believe this may be another designation for Zipporah from Midian, while others interpret it as a new wife Moses took in addition to or after Zipporah. Mixed marriages were not uncommon in the ancient Near East but could create social tensions.

Events and Customs

Leprosy as punishment: צָרַעַת (tsara'at) was understood in ancient Israel as a divine judgment, especially linked to sin against God's chosen ones or against holy things. That Miriam's skin became "white as snow" (verse 10: מְצֹרַעַת כַּשָּׁלֶג) was a severe divine punishment. Some interpreters see an ironic dimension in that she, who criticized Moses for his Cushite (dark-skinned) wife, herself was struck with a skin disease that made her skin white.

Seven days of isolation outside the camp reflects purity laws detailed in Leviticus 13–14. The comparison to a father spitting in his daughter's face (verse 14) illustrates public shame and disgrace—spitting was a known act of humiliation in the ancient Near East. Seven days represented a standard period of cleansing in Israelite culture.

The word עָנָיו (anav) in verse 3 (the keri reading; the ketiv has ענו), translated "humble" or "meek", does not mean weakness, but rather not asserting one's own honor or rights. It describes someone who entrusts their cause to God instead of defending themselves. This explains why Moses did not react to the criticism but instead interceded for his sister.

The expression "mouth to mouth" (פֶּה אֶל־פֶּה) in verse 8 describes Moses' unique communication with God—direct and without intermediaries, unlike other prophets who received revelations through dreams and visions. The word תְּמֻנָה (temunah, "likeness/form") suggests that Moses saw God's manifestation in a special way.

Places

Hazeroth (חֲצֵרוֹת, "enclosures/courts") was one of the camping sites during the wilderness journey, located somewhere on the Sinai Peninsula between Mount Sinai and Kadesh-barnea. The name suggests a place with fenced areas, possibly for livestock. After the events in this chapter, the people moved on to the Wilderness of Paran, the large desert area in northeastern Sinai bordering on the southern edge of Canaan.
