When mankind began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them,
the sons of God saw that the daughters of mankind were beautiful, and they took as wives any of them they chose.
Then the LORD said, "My Spirit shall not contend* with man forever, for he is flesh. His days shall be a hundred and twenty years." [*Footnote: The meaning of the Hebrew verb is uncertain; it may also mean 'remain in' or 'abide with.']
The Nephilim* were on the earth in those days—and afterward as well—when the sons of God went in to the daughters of mankind and they bore them children. These were the mighty men of old, men of renown. [*Footnote: The meaning of the Hebrew word Nephilim is uncertain; it is often understood as referring to giants.]
The LORD saw how great the wickedness of mankind had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was nothing but evil all the time.
And the LORD regretted that he had made mankind on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart.
So the LORD said, "I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created—from man to animals, to creatures that crawl and birds of the sky—for I regret that I made them."
But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD.
This is the account of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked with God.
Now the earth was corrupt in God's sight, and the earth was filled with violence.
God saw the earth, and behold, it was corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted its way on the earth.
So God said to Noah, "The end of all flesh has come before me, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. And behold, I am about to destroy them, along with the earth.
Make yourself an ark of cypress wood;* make rooms in it and coat it with pitch inside and out. [*Footnote: Hebrew gopher wood; the exact kind of tree is unknown.]
This is how you are to build it: the ark is to be three hundred cubits long, fifty cubits wide, and thirty cubits high.
Make a roof for the ark,* finishing it to a cubit from the top, and put a door in the side of the ark. Build it with lower, middle, and upper decks. [*Footnote: The Hebrew word rendered 'roof' is uncertain; it may mean an opening for light.]
As for me, I am about to bring the floodwaters on the earth, to destroy all flesh under the heavens that has the breath of life in it. Everything on the earth will perish.
But I will establish my covenant with you, and you will enter the ark—you and your sons and your wife and your sons' wives with you.
You are to bring into the ark two of every living creature, of all flesh, to keep them alive with you—male and female.
Birds of every kind, animals of every kind, and creatures that crawl on the ground of every kind—two of each will come to you to be kept alive.
And you—take for yourself every kind of food that is eaten, and gather it in; it will be food for you and for them."
Noah did all that God had commanded him; yes, so he did.
