Jonah 2 contains the prophet's prayer from inside the fish—three days and three nights in darkness, a cry for deliverance. Jesus pointed to Jonah's experience as a sign of his own death and resurrection.

Then the LORD appointed a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

From the belly of the fish Jonah prayed to the LORD his God:

"In my distress I called to the LORD, and he answered me. From the belly of Sheol I cried for help, and you heard my voice.

You hurled me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the currents swirled around me; all your breakers and your waves swept over me.

I said, 'I have been driven from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.'

The waters closed in over me, threatening my life; the deep surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head.

I sank down to the roots of the mountains; the earth barred me in forever. But you brought my life up from the pit, O LORD my God.

As my life was ebbing away, I remembered the LORD, and my prayer came to you, to your holy temple.

Those who cling to worthless idols forsake the steadfast love that would be theirs.

But I will sacrifice to you with a voice of thanksgiving. What I have vowed I will fulfill. Salvation belongs to the LORD!"

And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah out onto dry land.
