The LORD said to me: Take a large tablet and write on it with an ordinary stylus: "Belonging to Maher-shalal-hash-baz."
And I took reliable witnesses for myself: Uriah the priest and Zechariah son of Jeberechiah.
Then I went to the prophetess, and she conceived and bore a son. And the LORD said to me: Name him Maher-shalal-hash-baz.
For before the boy knows how to say "My father" or "My mother," the wealth of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria will be carried off before the king of Assyria.
The LORD spoke to me again, saying:
Because this people has rejected the gently flowing waters of Shiloah and has taken delight in Rezin and the son of Remaliah,
therefore the Lord is about to bring up against them the mighty, abundant waters of the River — the king of Assyria in all his glory. It will rise over all its channels and overflow all its banks.
It will sweep on into Judah, flooding and passing through, reaching up to the neck; and its outspread wings will cover the whole breadth of your land, O Immanuel.
Rage, you peoples, and be shattered! Listen, all you far corners of the earth! Arm yourselves and be shattered; arm yourselves and be shattered!
Devise your plan — it will be thwarted. Speak your word — it will not stand. For God is with us.
For thus the LORD spoke to me, his hand strong upon me, warning me not to walk in the way of this people:
Do not call conspiracy everything this people calls conspiracy; do not fear what they fear, and do not be terrified.
The LORD of hosts — him you shall regard as holy; he shall be your fear, he shall be your dread.
He will become a sanctuary, but also a stone that makes people stumble and a rock that trips them up — for both houses of Israel — a trap and a snare for the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
Many will stumble over them; they will fall and be broken, they will be snared and captured.
Bind up the testimony; seal the teaching among my disciples.
I will wait for the LORD, who hides his face from the house of Jacob; in him I will hope.
Here I am, and the children the LORD has given me — we are signs and portents in Israel from the LORD of hosts, who dwells on Mount Zion.
And when they tell you to consult the mediums and the spiritists who chirp and mutter — should not a people consult its God? Should they consult the dead on behalf of the living?
To the teaching and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, there is no dawn for them.
They will pass through the land, hard-pressed and hungry; and when they are famished they will rage and curse their king and their god. They will turn their faces upward,
and they will look to the earth — but there is only distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish, and they will be thrust into thick darkness.
But there will be no gloom for the land that was in anguish. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will bring glory to the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.
