Jacob looked up and saw Esau coming, and with him four hundred men. So he divided the children among Leah, Rachel, and the two servant women.

He put the servant women and their children first, Leah and her children next, and Rachel and Joseph last.

He himself went on ahead of them, bowing to the ground seven times as he approached his brother.

But Esau ran to meet him and embraced him; he threw his arms around his neck and kissed him, and they wept.

Then Esau looked up and saw the women and the children, and he asked, "Who are these with you?" Jacob answered, "The children God has graciously given your servant."

Then the servant women came forward with their children and bowed down.

Leah also came forward with her children, and they bowed down. Last of all Joseph and Rachel came forward and bowed down.

Esau asked, "What was the meaning of all those droves I met?" Jacob said, "To find favor in my lord's eyes."

But Esau said, "I have plenty, my brother. Keep what is yours."

Jacob replied, "No, please—if I have found favor in your eyes, then accept this gift from my hand. For to see your face is like seeing the face of God, now that you have received me so kindly.

"Please take the blessing I have brought you, for God has been gracious to me, and I have all I need." So Jacob urged him, and he accepted it.

Then Esau said, "Let us set out and be on our way, and I will travel alongside you."

But Jacob said to him, "My lord knows that the children are frail, and that the flocks and herds are nursing their young and are my charge. If they are driven hard for even a single day, all the flocks will die.

Let my lord go on ahead of his servant, and I will move along slowly, at the pace of the herds before me and the pace of the children, until I come to my lord in Seir."

Esau said, "Then let me leave some of my men with you." "Why do that?" Jacob answered. "Only let me find favor in my lord's eyes."

So that day Esau started back on his way to Seir.

Jacob, however, journeyed on to Succoth, where he built himself a house and made shelters for his livestock. That is why the place is called Succoth.

After coming from Paddan Aram, Jacob arrived safely at the city of Shechem in the land of Canaan and camped within sight of the city.

For a hundred pieces of silver he bought from the sons of Hamor, Shechem's father, the plot of ground where he had pitched his tent.[fn]

There he set up an altar and called it El Elohe Israel—God, the God of Israel.

Esau appears in this chapter as the leader of a significant force of 400 men. This number indicates that Esau had established himself as a powerful clan leader in the Se'ir region. The figure of 400 was a typical size for a military force or entourage in the ancient Near East, and the same number is mentioned elsewhere in the Old Testament for armed groups (e.g., 1 Sam 22:2; 25:13; 30:10, 17). Esau's willingness and rejection of gifts ("I have enough, my brother") show that he had achieved considerable wealth and independence in his new homeland.

Hamor and Shechem are mentioned briefly in connection with Jacob's purchase of land. Hamor was the father of Shechem and apparently the leading figure in the city that bore his son's name.

Places

Se'ir (שֵׂעִיר) was the mountainous region southeast of the Dead Sea, later known as Edom. The name means "hairy" or "wooded" and describes the terrain. This became the homeland for Esau and his descendants, and the identification between Esau and Edom is well established in biblical tradition.

Succoth (סֻכּוֹת) means "booths" or "livestock enclosures." The place was located in the Jordan Valley, probably east of the Jordan River. Its location fits with Jacob's route from Gilead toward Canaan. That Jacob built a house and made "succoth" for his livestock shows a temporary but established settlement—a transition between nomadic and more settled life.

Shechem (שְׁכֶם) was one of the most important cities in the central highlands of Canaan. Archaeological excavations at Tell Balata have uncovered a significant city from the Middle Bronze Age (ca. 2000–1550 B.C.) with massive city walls and a large temple. The city lay strategically in the pass between Ebal and Gerizim and controlled important trade routes. That Jacob camped "in front of the city" and purchased land shows that he sought peaceful coexistence with the local population.

Events and Customs

Bowing seven times (וַיִּשְׁתַּחוּ אַרְצָה שֶׁבַע פְּעָמִים) was a formal gesture of submission known throughout the ancient Near East. The Amarna letters from the 14th century B.C. (ca. 1350–1330 B.C.), written by Canaanite vassal kings to Pharaoh, contain similar formulations: "To my lord's feet I fall down seven times and seven times." Jacob's behavior signaled that he recognized Esau as the more powerful party and sought reconciliation through ritual humility.

Running, embracing, and kissing (verse 4) represented the emotional response that went beyond formal protocols. The combination of these gestures expressed complete forgiveness and a restored family relationship. That both brothers wept underscores the genuine reconciliation.

The gift as "blessing" (בִּרְכָתִי): Jacob's choice of words in verse 11 is remarkable—he calls his gift "my blessing" (berakhah), the same word as the blessing he took from Esau through deception. This can be read as a symbolic return or compensation for the stolen blessing.

Key Terms

Kesitah (קְשִׂיטָה) was an ancient unit of weight or form of payment mentioned only three places in the Bible (Gen 33:19; Josh 24:32; Job 42:11). Its exact value is unknown, but it was probably a standardized weight of silver or gold. That this archaic term is used here (instead of shekel) may indicate the text's great age or a conscious archaism to mark the transaction as very old.

El Elohe Yisrael (אֵל אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל)—"El, God of Israel"—is the name Jacob gave to the altar. This is the first time Jacob uses his new name "Israel" in a cultic context. The naming of the altar connects his new identity from the Peniel experience with a concrete place of worship in the promised land.

The dotted letters above the word וַיִּשָּׁקֵהוּ ("and he kissed him") in verse 4 are one of ten places in the Torah with so-called puncta extraordinaria—dots over the letters that mark a textual-critical tradition. Rabbinic sources debated whether the kiss was sincere or ironic, and the dots may indicate early scribes' uncertainty about how this should be understood. The Masoretes preserved this marking as a sign of an ancient interpretive debate.
