So Israel set out with all that he had, and when he came to Beersheba, he offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac.

And God spoke to Israel in visions of the night: "Jacob, Jacob!" And he answered, "Here I am."

He said, "I am God, the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for there I will make you into a great nation.

I myself will go down with you to Egypt, and I myself will surely bring you up again; and Joseph's hand will close your eyes."

Then Jacob rose up from Beersheba, and the sons of Israel carried their father Jacob, their little ones, and their wives in the wagons Pharaoh had sent to carry him.

They took their livestock and the possessions they had acquired in the land of Canaan, and came to Egypt—Jacob and all his offspring with him:

his sons and his grandsons, his daughters and his granddaughters. All his offspring he brought with him to Egypt.

These are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt, Jacob and his sons: Reuben, Jacob's firstborn;

the sons of Reuben: Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi;

the sons of Simeon: Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jachin, Zohar, and Shaul, the son of a Canaanite woman;

the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari;

the sons of Judah: Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez, and Zerah—but Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan—and the sons of Perez were Hezron and Hamul;

the sons of Issachar: Tola, Puvah, Iob, and Shimron;

the sons of Zebulun: Sered, Elon, and Jahleel.

These are the sons Leah bore to Jacob in Paddan-aram, along with his daughter Dinah. His sons and daughters numbered thirty-three in all.

The sons of Gad: Ziphion, Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi, and Areli;

the sons of Asher: Imnah, Ishvah, Ishvi, Beriah, and their sister Serah; and the sons of Beriah: Heber and Malchiel.

These are the sons of Zilpah, whom Laban gave to his daughter Leah; she bore these to Jacob—sixteen persons in all.

The sons of Jacob's wife Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin.

In the land of Egypt, Manasseh and Ephraim were born to Joseph by Asenath, daughter of Potiphera, priest of On.

The sons of Benjamin: Bela, Becher, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim, and Ard.

These are the sons of Rachel who were born to Jacob—fourteen persons in all.

The sons of Dan: Hushim.

The sons of Naphtali: Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and Shillem.

These are the sons of Bilhah, whom Laban gave to his daughter Rachel; she bore these to Jacob—seven persons in all.

All the persons belonging to Jacob who came to Egypt, his own direct descendants, not counting the wives of Jacob's sons, numbered sixty-six in all.

With the two sons born to Joseph in Egypt, the persons of Jacob's household who came to Egypt numbered seventy.

Jacob sent Judah ahead of him to Joseph, to get directions to Goshen. And so they came to the land of Goshen.

Joseph had his chariot made ready and went up to Goshen to meet his father Israel. As soon as he appeared before him, he threw his arms around his neck and wept on his neck a long while.

Israel said to Joseph, "Now I can die, since I have seen your face and know that you are still alive."

Then Joseph said to his brothers and to his father's household, "I will go up and tell Pharaoh. I will say to him, 'My brothers and my father's household, who were in the land of Canaan, have come to me.

The men are shepherds, for they have been keepers of livestock, and they have brought their flocks and herds and everything they own.'

So when Pharaoh calls you in and asks, 'What is your occupation?'

you are to answer, 'Your servants have been keepers of livestock from our youth until now, we and our fathers before us.' Then you will be allowed to settle in the land of Goshen, for every shepherd is detestable to the Egyptians."

Places

Beersheba (בְּאֵר שָׁבַע) was the southernmost point of inhabited Canaan, often expressed as "from Dan to Beersheba," and marked the boundary toward the wilderness. The place held special significance for Jacob's family: Here Abraham had planted a tamarisk tree and called upon the name of the Lord (Gen 21:33), and here Isaac had built an altar after God revealed Himself to him (Gen 26:23-25). That Jacob stops precisely here to offer sacrifices to "the God of his father Isaac" shows that he consciously connects with the family's holy tradition before leaving the Promised Land.

Goshen (גֹּשֶׁן) was a fertile area in the eastern Nile Delta, well-suited for livestock raising. Egyptian texts refer to this region as a place where Asian nomads were permitted to settle with their flocks, especially during drought periods. The area was strategically located—close enough to the Egyptian center of power for protection, yet sufficiently separated so that the Hebrews could preserve their identity.

People

Asenath (אָסְנַת), daughter of Potiphera, priest of On (v. 20), represents Joseph's integration into Egyptian society. On (also known as Heliopolis) was the center of sun worship in Egypt and one of the kingdom's most important religious centers. That Joseph married the daughter of a priest there shows what high status Pharaoh had given him. The names Manasseh ("the one who causes to forget") and Ephraim ("double fruitfulness") are nevertheless Hebrew names with theological significance (cf. Gen 41:51-52), showing that Joseph maintained his Israelite identity despite integration into Egyptian culture.

The genealogy (vv. 8-27) mentions a total of 70 persons in Jacob's household. The text specifies that 66 persons came directly from Canaan, "who came out of his loins" (v. 26). With Joseph and his two sons already in Egypt (v. 27), as well as Jacob himself, this makes a total of 70 persons. The number 70 has symbolic meaning in the Bible and represents completeness. The Septuagint (the Greek translation) lists 75 persons; this number, which is also cited in Acts 7:14, may be due to the Septuagint including more of Joseph's descendants.

Events and Customs

The night vision at Beersheba (מַרְאֹת הַלַּיְלָה, v. 2) follows a pattern known from other divine revelations in the Bible: God calls the person by name twice (cf. Gen 22:11; Exod 3:4), and the person answers "Here I am" (הִנֵּנִי). God's promise to "bring you up again" (וְאָנֹכִי אַעַלְךָ גַם־עָלֹה, v. 4) points both to Jacob's burial in Canaan (Gen 50:13) and prophetically to the future exodus from Egypt. The promise that "Joseph shall put his hand upon your eyes" (v. 4) refers to the custom of closing the eyes of the deceased, suggesting that Jacob will die peacefully with his beloved son by his side.

The reunion scene (v. 29) describes Joseph as having "harnessed his chariot"—an expression of high Egyptian status, since chariots were a luxury symbol reserved for the elite. That he "fell on his neck" and "wept long" reflects Eastern expressions of strong emotional devotion at reunions.
